I have a Preston Co.,Family by the name of Hood who do not seem to have left a trace except for Ruth Hood who married Abraham Wotring. Morton in his book states that Francis Carrico had a son John Carrico who married _____ Hood and all the sons of Francis Carrico went west to Indiana. Can I trust this Clue? If I can, then did the Sons stop in Kentucky on their way to Indiana? Is this the same John Carrico who is listed in the early Tax Records? There are no dates mentioned in Morton's book. Can somebody help me out? Georgina Hyde
Georgina, Portrait and Biographical Album of Lenawee County, Mich., Chapman Brothers, 1888, page 720: Samuel G. Wotring...was born in West Union, now Aurora, Preston Co., W. Va., May 1, 1840... The mother of our subject, whose maiden name was Ruth Hood, was a native of Preston County, and is also living at an advanced age. Her father, Julius Hood, was born in Virginia, where he was also reared and married, but in the early settlement of Ohio he went to that State to take up land, making the journey from Virginia on foot, and while there was taken sick and died. The Carrico information in Morton's History of Preston County is mostly incorrrect. On page 419 he lists the family of a Francis Carrico. At least two of the children named, Eliza and Melinda, were children of Peter & Catharine Carrico. No record has been found of this Francis Carrico in the censuses and tax lists of Monongalia and Preston Counties.. Also on page 419, Morton states that Catharine - sister to Francis - m. James Goff. Catharine was the daughter of John Turton Goff and had a large family by her uncle James Goff. James Carrico and Nancy Holbert were married in Monongalia Co Dec 30, 1813 but I have no further information on the other children as listed by Morton in the Francis Carrico family. To add to the confusion, a genealogy of the Carrico family was published in the April 30, 1908 issue of The Preston County Journal which includes the wife of Julius Hood as a daughter of Francis Carrico but Morton does not include her in his history published six years later.
