If anyone has access to any of the records for the United Brethren in Preston Co., WV I would appreciate some info. When I visited my Grandmother in the summers, they went to the United Brethren Church. I have a picture of my gr-great grandparents, she has the white cap on & he has the squared beard. I always wondered about this until I found out that the Brethren of that time dressed like that. According to info I have, Jacob GREATHOUSE [b. 1821/23 possibly PA] & Catherine [NICOLA] CRESS [b.c. 1809/10 MD], widow of Thomas Jefferson CRESS, were married Aug 4, 1840 [no proof of date or where]. So far, I have not been able to find any death info on Jacob. He was probably buried in the family plot on a farm & probably died sometime between the 1900 census & the 1910 census. Would there possibly be a record of the marriage and of his death in the United Brethren Church records. Any help would be appreciated. Barb K.
My family also has a United Brethren connection...and although they left the Preston County WV area around 1800 I also would be interested in any records in Preston County for possible other relatives such as the Elliott and Daugherty families...A little bit about what I have learned although I am far from an expert...I have been told the UB did not really keep much in the way of records...feeling that would be prideful...However their was a newspaper called the "Religous Telescope"...Their are a few copies on line..try googling the name "Religious Telescope"... Also Otterbein College in Westerville Ohio was founded by the "early" United Brethren and the archivist did find an 1860 obituary for my 3rd Great Grandfather Benjamin Rightmire and my 2nd Great Grandfather William Rightmire attended school at Otterbein very early in its excistance....They will do very limited research...At some point in the late 1800's their was a split between the conservative and more liberal members of the Church....I had inquired about records for the Preston County Church with no luck but hope this info will help you and if you find something else please let me know..... ----- Original Message ----- From: "Barbara M Kelley" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, November 07, 2005 9:07 AM Subject: [WV Preston County] UB church records and/or info > If anyone has access to any of the records for the United Brethren in > Preston Co., WV I would appreciate some info.
