Just in case, here is what I know: Preston County was named for James Patton Preston. He was the grandson of John Preston who settled near Staunton, Virginia in 1740. Additional information about the Preston family can be found beginning on page 96 of Oren F. Morton's 1914 book, "A History of Preston County." The book was reprinted by McClain Printing, 212 Main Street,Parsons, WV 26287 in 1997. I have the book and would be happy to send you additional information if you have not already received it. Stan, Thanks for responding. This divorce may have occurred in another county or State. I have never been able to learn the identity of Lucinda Goff but believe her to be a daughter of Salathiel & Malinda (Garner) Goff. She died about 1856 but, unfortunately, the duplicate Preston Co death records for 1856 are partly missing. Morton's History of Preston Co has the order of Michael Conner's two wives reversed. He married (1) Lucinda Goff, (2) Elizabeth E Burns. Roy, A divorce that is not included in the list provided is Michael Conner and Lucinda Goff. I am not sure of the dates, I believe they got married and divorced between 1846 and 1847. This separation was alluded to in Michael's military records, but no dates stated. Stan

Prior to the establishment of Circuit Courts in Virginia/West Virginia in 1851, a petition was required to be submitted to the Virginia General Assembly in order to legally obtain a divorce. There were only three Preston Co petitions for divorce submitted to the Virginia General Assembly 1818-1851, as follows: 1831 John Conrad Holstein vs Wilhelmina Holstein 1832 John Pifer vs Elizabeth Pifer 1841 Jacob Plum vs Mary Jane Plum Divorce records 1851-1869 were destroyed when Elihu Gregg torched the Preston Co courthouse on Mar 7, 1869. The following Preston Co divorces were published in surviving area newspapers prior to the establishment of The Preston County Journal on May 19, 1866: 1852 Daniel Hunt vs Harriet A Hunt 1857 Thomas W Funk vs Rachael Funk 1863 Sarah Ann Auman vs Nathaniel Auman 1866 Phillip D Saucer vs Elizabeth Saucer The Preston County Journal published the following divorces prior to the burning of the courthouse: 1866 Rebecca Rummell vs Thomas B Rummell 1867 Clark Sypolt vs Elizabeth Sypolt 1867 Susannah Reynolds vs John Reynolds 1867 Elisabeth Miller vs William Miller 1868 James A Freeland vs Mary C Freeland 1868 Mary Whiting vs Isaac E Whiting Preston Co divorces on record after the courthouse fire are closed to the public. Does anyone have knowledge of any Preston Co divorces 1818-1869 from military pension applications and other sources that are not included above? Thanks. Roy Lockhart
