I'm a descendant of Amos Dodge, who relocated from Block Island, RI, to Ohio, then to Preston County about 1838. I'll be in Preston County, WV and Garrett County, MD September 2 through September 11 this year searching for information about Amos and his descendants and would appreciate any help offered. I have gathered quite a bit on my family so far, but have many gaps, details too numerous to list here, but am looking for newspaper clippings, personal accounts, legal records, church records, etc. Willing to share what I have. I will not have email service during the above dates. Please call me any time on my cell phone, 804-694-7374. Thanks to everyone for keeping this list active.

George and Nancy Hardman owned Franklin Furnace aka Franklin Iron and Coal Co. It was named for an infant of theirs who died around 1855/1856 at the Clinton Furnace, Monongalia County, also owned (1853-1859) by them. The furnace was called Hardman Furnace as was the community George Hardman established for the workers. In addition to the furnace later being called Irondale the general area was/is also referred to as Victoria. The B&O RR siding (which no longer exists) was called Hardman Siding. The tower at the switch, also used as a helper station, still exists although CSX moved it down the line slightly toward Newburg (which is where George Hardman died in 1873). According to Wiley's History of Preston, there was town called Franklin built for the people who worked in George Hardman's iron furnace which, says Wiley, was called Franklin Furnace. Perhaps some folks called the place Hardman instead of Franklin. When the furnace was sold, the new owner called it Irondale, and the town's name was also changed to Irondale. Later Wiley writes that the Furnace was first called Hardman's, that would have been 1859-1865 when George Hardman owned it, and then the Franklin Iron and Coal Co. apparently purchased it. It was still run by Hardman, so perhaps some folks still referred to the place as Hardman. This was in the Lyon Dist. Can someone clarify the geographic location of Hardman, WV? Is it located in Taylor County or Preston County? Does the community still exist? My maternal grandmother was born there. Thanks, Todd Gerkin -- TMG tgerkin@triad.rr.com
JoAnn, Please e-mail Susie youngl@mvdsl.com. I am trying to e-mail you some information and I keep getting it back. Here is the information I am trying to send to your personal e-mail. I found a Willam H. Cupp born 7 Feb 1840 died 26 Feb 1912 buried in the cemetery at Centenary Church, about 6 miles southeast of Bruceton Mills, and in Pleasant District, Preston County, West Virginia. Copied July 4, 1932. Also, there is a Mrs. Hannah E. Cupp buried in the same cemetery. Her death date is 10 May 1931 aged 85 years 1 month and 15 days (could this be Anna?). This information is found in the publication book: Some Early Families in Grant and Pleasant Districts, Preston County, West Virginia by Edward Thorp King originally published 1933 page 206. Could this be your William H. Cupp. I know you had a different birth date for your William H. Cupp. But what is the possibility of one of the birth dates being wrong for William and what is the possibility Hannah was called Anna? Just thinking of the possibilities. Do you have this book? It has a lot of Preston County information and several Cupp families. Susie youngl@mvdsl.com I am descended from William H. Cupp born 6 Dec 1853 (per death > certificate) in Preston Co., VA. Mr Wolfe Perhaps we should compare notes. We may (or may not as these things go) be distantly related. I am a direct descendant of George Hardman who founded and ran Hardman Furnace near Independence as well as the Gladesville Furnace. His son, Hans Roland Hardman, my great grandfather, ran several mills in the area before moving to McKeesport, PA with the entire family in the early 1890's. My grandfather, George Walter Hardman, born and raised in Preston County, married the daughter of a local Baptist preacher, Joseph Clark. Ms Sisler I will also contact Mr Wolfe. I am a direct descendant of George Hardman who founded and ran Hardman Furnace near Independence and also the Gladesville Furnace. His son, Hans Roland Hardman lived in the area until the 1890s when they all moved to McKeesport, PA. Can you provide the names on the markers. They were all Baptists and my grandfather, George Walter Hardman married a preacher's daughter. The Preacher was Joseph Clark. There are some parts of the family missing. Can you provide the names from the cemetery?
