I was born 1952 in Dellslow, along the creek on Rural Route 3 in a cabin built by my grandmother Virginia May aka Margaret Virginia Fawley - who's father Noah Edward Fawley lived just up the road. Continue up this road about 2 miles and it connects with Summers School Road. In fact, years later my grandmother bought land on up past her dad's place; from Summers School (on Summers School Road), you can look down the hill and see where my grandmother lived across the road from Jesse and Dolly Hess. 3. Is William Harrison Cupp the man who was in the 6th Regiment of the West Virginia Cavalry? My great grandfather's middle name was Harvey. He was born in Dec of 1853. I have wondered if his father might have died in the Civil War. Thanks for your reply and for that of Vana Fessler. There were a number of Cupp children in the 1860 census who were not with their families. Maybe a migration to Indiana or some other place played a role in their circumstances. Hi, Dora, What was once called Chalk Hill is now simply "Chalkhill." Perhaps tourism caused a change in the Deer Lake Road name. It now appears as Ohiopyle Rd in Wharton Twp. and Kentuck Rd in Stewart Twp. Trail - and a small body of water that my guess is is Deer Lake. >Next question; where is Wharton? Wharton is the name for both a very large Twp. and a tiny cross-roads which is actually called Wharton Furnace as there was an old iron furnace there - - - the remains are interesting to visit. There is a Lutheran Church and Cemetery on the Deer Lake Rd aka Ohiopyle Rd. likely near where the Raymond farm was located. Sorry but I cannot help you with the White School House outside of Bruceton Mills unless you can find mention of a stream or "run." Best regards, Jane

    1. [WVPRESTO] Can't find Deer Lake Rd., Chalkhilll; White School House in Bruceton Mills
    2. Dora Smith
    3. Properly maybe this ought to be posted to the Lafayette Co PA list, but it's nearby. I need to find a couple of places. One if the "raymond farm", on Deer Lake Rd., a short distance from Rt. 40, in Chalk Hill - which Google Maps thinks is Chalkhill, several miles from Uniontown, in Pennsylvania. Google Earth and Google Maps find a Deer Lake Trail, which does not interesect with Route 40. Chalk Chill Chlopyle or whatever Rd does, and Old Mill Rd branches off of that toward Deer Lake Trail - and a small body of water that my guess is is Deer Lake. It was in 1960 that the Raymond farm was located on Deer Lake Rd. that intersected wtih Rte 40 - has the name changed? Next question; where is Wharton? It's a large township, and that's where the 1900 to 1920 census finds the Raymond family. Google maps says it's a tiny hamlet a couple of miles on down the road away from Uniontown, from Chalk Hill. County map at Wikipedia depicts Wharton township as huge and covering roughly the area where Chalk Hill would be. Is Chalk Hill (or Chalkhill) in Wharton Township? If that is true, than perhaps teh Raymond farm was always in Chalk Hill; not they lived in Wharton in 1900 to 1920 and then got their farm in Chalk Hill. (Original name of Raymond family was Rayman, family was German, and at one point it was Ranno.) Family is notorious; since 1920 they have shot members of their own family three times and at other people too many times to count. In 1960 one of them holed up in the house and shot everyone coming down the road! This made Time Magazine. At the time his uncle was in jail for shooting his son in law. Time described tehm as mean mountain men. I also need to know the location of the Chalk Hill Lutheran Cemetery, which is close enough to the Raymond farm that someone trying to escape being shot by Dan Raymond in 1960 ran across it on his way to shelter a short distance away. Also a number of the Raymond family are buried there. Then, back in West Virginia, apparently Edward, father of Albert who shot his wife and then himself in 1920/22, had a place in Bruceton Mills. Their grave markers are on what was their farm, "on the farm owned by Jesse Ryan (not now) and near tehhouse of Alva Bryte, about one half mile due south of the White School house northwest of Burceton Mills). Now, I'm not even going to ask Google Earth where's the White School House. OK, I did, and it couldn't find it. Anyone know where the farm was? Or the White School House? Edward had a first cousin named Conrad also living in the area, and maybe a brother named Alexander (though I wodner if that was his son). All originally came from elsewhere. Daniel Raymond was located on a farm not many miles from the Fayette Co., Pa. border, north Bruceton Mills, which is where I live. Daniel seems to have been a brother of my ancestor, Alexander Raymond. Daniel had a tombstone on the farm, Alexander does not. Difficult to reach the cemetery today. To find them before 1870, you should probably look in Somerset Co., Pa. You probably know that Daniel was married more than once. Have you seen the book "History of the Reiman, Rieman, Reaman and Rayman Clan" by a committee of descendants, printed by Walsworth 1982? That compilation gives the parents of Daniel and Alexander as Charles Rayman and Catherine Meyers. > I cannot find them before 1870. 1. Re: [WVPRESTO] Where was Grant Township, Preston County, West Virginia in 1870-80?

    3. Dora: Grant Township became known as Grant District which exists today. I'm sitting in it. It would help to know who you are looking for. Might be able to give you an approximate location. Janice > I'm trying to trace a family taht I find in West Virginia in the census in 1870 and 1880. Wehre WAS "Grant Township" in 1860?
