Joe, "A" J.W. Parks was my 3gr-granduncle who for a number of years, up to his death, was cashier of the Bank of Kingwood. He m. Mary R. Heermans. However, I have him b. 1834 which could only place him as in the cabin living with his parents, Henry Lone Parks & Elizabeth Garner. Henry was a "cabinetmaker", which may mean undertaker in those days. ; ) I have never seen anything about a "Parks store". Will be interesting to find out, tho. Elizabeth Garner Parks was dgtr. of William Garner & Frances Roberts. William d. on farm 3 mi. n.e. of Kingwood on Cheat River Hill. All the tidbits add to the story of our ancestors lives and, of course, create more questions. lol We all thank you for helping!! Carolyn: Don't know specifically who your Parks and Garner Families are! - Around 1797, Charles Byrne built a log cabin on the south side of High Street. J. W. Parks lived in the Byrne house in the 1830s, and later Walter Amos owned the property. The building was torn down in February 1992 and the logs from the old section were hauled to Virginia. - In the fall of 1873, brick pavement was laid in front of the Parks and Co. store. That's it! Hi Joe, Do you have any mention of Elliott's around 1810? In particular John Elliott. Bill Elliott ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joe & Erin Hartman" <wegotrocks@verizon.net> To: wvpresto@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, January 15, 2009 4:11:51 PM GMT -05:00 US/Canada Eastern Subject: [WVPRESTO] A book on Kingwood All: I have a small book on the History of Kingwood ("Indians plus the first 150 Years") by Bill Williams. I've had it for some time, but just recently got the urge to read it again. My original intention was to create a (sort of) index to the names included, but his writing style isn't very organized (no offense, Bill) to do that, so it early on became way more trouble that it would probably have been worth. At any rate, I can look up some name/info if folks out there have any kind of date references - that's how the book is organized. As a caveat, please don't send a "give me all the information on ..." kind of message - the way the book is written, I'd have to go through the entire thing for each request. This is the kind of info included: Jacob Funk built a tannery in 1810, on the north side of Main Street, near the intersection of Sigler Street. Funk sold his tannery to William Sigler in 1813. Joe, Does the book have anything on my Parks & Garner families? Thanks for looking. Carolyn
A couple of items are all ... - In January 1841, an academy for the instruction of Preston County youth was established. One of the first trustees was William Elliot. - In 1848, a man named Dr. Elliot (no first name noted) owned a store that burned. The store was in what is now downtown, but there was no fire equipment in those days. The book is sort of sparse on courthouse/genealogic facts, especially before about 1840. =========================== elliottfamily00@comcast.net wrote: >Hi Joe, Do you have any mention of Elliott's around 1810? A draft of the Trembly section of Morton's Preston County History, published in Preston County Journal 1907-8 (articles published by Preston Co Historical Society - PRESTON NAMES OF NOTE) states that "Mary, oldest daughter of Benjamin (Trembly), lived single." The writers were closer to the original story than we are. There is no known Trembly cemetery in Preston. There are Tremblys buried in several cemeteries. No burial place has been established for Benjamin. Since the references say that he drowned in Cheat River near Ices Ferry, which is in Monongalia County, if his body was recovered, it may have been buried near the site where he was found, likely without a marker. I've heard a tradition that he was buried "along the Cheat" which doesn't narrow the search. I have found no tombstone or marker for Mary Trembly in the four volumes of IN REMEMBRANCE: TOMBSTONE READINGS OF PRESTON CO., WV. (Fourth volume not yet in print.) WV does cemetery or grave lookups in Preston Co.,Wv. I need a lookup for a Mary Trembly who supposedly died in 1842. Her Parents were Benjamin and Eunice Trembly in Bruceton Mills.Wiley say's that Mary and her sister Sarah both died in 1842,but my GGGgranmother was a Mary Trembly from VA who married a John Roberts from VA also, had 3 children and then moved to Knox Co.,OH and lived to the ripe old age of 90.I know Wiley made a lot of mistakes in his book and want to clear up any doubts,so please let me know if you have any idea of the truth,Thanks ahead of time,Barbara55678 Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I had most of it, but I did find a few bits that I needed. I'm going down to WV this Summer and plan to go to Bluemont Cemetery and see if I can find my Great Grandfather "Samuel" and his family. I was in Taylor Co. WV 3 yrs. ago, but I had no idea where they were buried. I really appreciate every piece of info. that I get, because it helps me to get a better picture of my family. Thanks again, Carol Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
