    3. Carole, There is a death record for Lucian Sliger at: http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_view.aspx?Id=4766716&Type=Death but it doesn't give his parents' names. Neither does his obit in The Preston News, the only obit I currently have available for him, as follows: The Preston News. KINGWOOD, W. VA., FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 25, 1914. VOL. VI. NO. 38. Page 1, Column 4 Lucian Sliger. Lucian Sliger, one of Albrigts [sic] oldest citizens passed away at his home in that village on Monday morning of this week. He was born near Brandonville this county in the year 1845 making him at the time of his death 69 years of age. He was married twice, having a family of nine children most of which are living. He was a soldier in the civil war having served three years and a half in Company C, 3rd West Va. Infantry. Funeral services were held from his home on Thesday [sic] afternoon from his residence in Albrights conduced by Rev. A. D. Craig, of the Methodist Church in Kingwood, interment in the family plot close to his old home. 3. Carole, Lucian Sliger: In the 1850 census of Preston County, Virginia, Lucian Sliger is listed with the James and Mary "Pullam" (?) family in the 45th District. He is indexed at Ancestry.com as "Julian", but the first letter is definitely an "L", when compared with others in this census. Reference: Census Place: District 45, Preston, Virginia; Roll: M432_969; Page: 458; Image: 393. He is listed as 4 years of age. I did not find him in the 1860 census of Preston County, Virginia, nor the 1870 census of Preston County, West Virginia. Other "Sliger" names in this 1850 census of Preston County, Virginia are Henry (born ca 1783) , John (b. ca 1831) , Mary (b ca 1785) , Samuel (b ca 1833) and Sarah (b. ca 1829). Wilhelm Family: In the 1860 census of Preston County, Virginia (District 3, Preston, Virginia; Roll: M653_1372; Page: 88; Image: 89l, post office of Tannery), in the Michael and Mary A. Wilhelm family is Mary (middle initial unclear), age 5, with siblings Elizabeth (23), Latamon (sp?) (21), and George 11). In the 1870 Census of Preston County, West Virginia (Portland, Preston, West Virginia; Roll: M593_1697; Page: 159; Image: 579, post office Rowlesburg) in this same Michael and Mary Wilhelm family are: Michael (age unclear), Mary A (age 55), Elizabeth (34), Georg (31), and Mary E (16). This Wilhelm family is very likely the correct family. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Mountain Heaven" <mountainheaven@hotmail.com> To: <wvpresto@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, February 28, 2009 4:47 AM Subject: [WVPRESTO] SLIGER / WILHELM – Preston County, VA (now WV) > > Please, if anyone could help me, I would be tremendously grateful. > > I am seeking the names of the parents of: Lucian SLIGER, b. 1845, > Preston County, VA (now WV). > > Also, any information pertaining to his first wife, Mary E. I thought they were sisters with Mary being the youngest. Mary had a son also named Roscoe, so I think I am looking for the same High family connection. Grace Della High was born in 1882 in Rowlesburg, WV. She is from my husband's side of the family. I also have in the High siblings: Grace, Frank, Al, Gordon, Clyde, Lucy, and Mary being the youngest. This does not seem to go with the list that is mentioned for the High family in the 2nd post. I don't have anything on the parents of these siblings. thanks if you can help figure out the connection. I also have pictures of Mary and Grace if that can help. LeAnn Weaver lpweaver@verizon.net Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. They were the infamous Indian fighters...but at least some went over to the Beverly area. I am thinking there is a connection to the famous Indian figher family (John, William, David) and the Thomas White family from around Beverly (sons William Thomas and David). The other Whites around Beverly seem connected to the Indian fighter family (Jacob, Isaac [who was the son of John in the Indian fighter family]). And at least John Wayland (who wrote histories of Shenandoah and Rockingham Counties) thought that a William White who moved to Shenandoah County from Monocacy, MD in 1734 was related to the Indian fighter family of Whites. Thomas White, from around Beverly seems to be shrouded in family stories that can not be substantiated. Rumor has it that he came from England and was married to a servant or a daughter of a servant named Abigail Grubb. From all of that story, w! e know for a fact that he was married to an Abigail for sure from will of about 1800...from which we can obtain his sons' names. Information at this period is so rare and elusive that this family is amazingly frustrating!!! Does anyone have ANYTHING on ANY White from the 1700s in Randolph, Monongalia, Shenandoah, Hardy or ANYWHERE in that area???" There are some White postings on the site and plenty of Metheny. 3. Cheat Mountain - as it exists today - is nowhere near Monongalia County or Morgantown. The easiest way to hit Cheat Mountain is via Route 50 between Grafton (WV) and Keyser (WV). There are a number of mountains (5 of them - to be exact) that made that stretch of Route 50 one of the worst driving roads in the East (before interstates). The one I'm most familiar with is on the western side of Cheat Lake. I-48 runs up the mountain from Monongalia County into Preston County. I've always heard it called Cheat Mountain. Cooper Rock State Park is a popular picnic area on top of the mountain and has been for many years, way before it even became a park. The little town of Pisgah is also located on to top the mountain. Bruceton Mills is located about 6 miles on the other side of the mountain. Many of my ancestors and relatives (Haines, Wolfe, Darnell) were/are from around there. Good luck in your search. I thought that Cheat Mountain ran through Pocahontas, Tucker, and Randolph counties. I am familiar with it in the Snowshoe area. I also lived in Morgantown for 2 years and the Cheat River and Cheat Lake is just outside Morgantown. Cheat Lake is on I-68. Coopers Rock State Park is close to Cheat Lake. I found an interesting article on mining in the area and it talks about the Cheat Mountain ironworks in Preston and Monongalia counties. I can't help at all with Cheat Hill.
