Author: jemwalsh Surnames: Cox, Scott, Boyd Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.westvirginia.counties.preston/2766.1.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Quoting from Jean Cox's book p. 668: "Mary Alena married second John R. Scott 3 July 1883 by the Rev. John Boyd, Pastor of the Regular Baptist Church. He came from Brandonville, W.Va. and was a widower. His first wife was Sarah H. (---). She died 25 Nov 1876, age 26 years, 6 mos., 21 das. and was buried in Centenary Cemetery, six miles soutwest of Bruceton Mills, W.VA." There is a John R. Scott who appears in the 1850 Census of Preston, VA as age one in the household of John Scott 43 and his wife, Mary, age 40. This may be the same John R. Scott who m. Sarah H. By the time of the 1870 Census, this John R. Scott was age 20 still living w/ his then widowed Mother; they were in the Grant District of Preston. Oren F. Morton writes in his History on p. 389: "John Scott came from Baltimore and settled in the glades of Grant in 1770. . . . He was a justice at the time of his death. In his later years, John, Jr., lived at the Little Sandy bridge on the Kingwood road, and kept a store. He died at the outbreak of the Civil War, while a member of the Virginia Legislature." Then on p. 464: " John b. 1751 d. 1828 m. Catharine ___" children:1. John b. 1770 d. 1846 m. Mary Cuppett; 2. David ->PA; 3. Nancy m. Joseph Carroll ->PA; 4. dau. m. ___ Guard->West; 5. Jane m. James Carroll->PA; 6. Eliabeth m. Andrew Sterling; 7 Thomas b. 1813 d. 1890 m. 1st Martha McGrew, 2nd Sarah A. Kantner. Looks like John b.c. 1807 might have been a son of John b. 1770 and that Thomas b. 1813 was also likely that later John's son. Muddled. Author: jemwalsh Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.westvirginia.counties.preston/2765.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: The folks at WVArchives have placed more birth records online. Most of what is available now is in the form of ledgers which are grouped by year and then alphabetized by the first letter of the last name. So, when you retrieve a "record" you are actually retrieving a whole page of births. In terms of the date, you can only search for the year. I just did a search for "Mary" b. 1889 in Monongalia and that produced a page #88 containing babies w/ surnames beginning with A-H(partial) born in 1889, but none b. 22 Sep. Next found page #89 w/ H-N births, but none b. 22 Sep. Next, page #90 P-V, none b. 22 Sep. I've tried several different approaches trying to locate page #91, but no luck. They're having server problems and the system times out too quickly. This is the url for searching birth records: http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_bcsearch.aspx Hope this helps. It is possible that her birth was not recorded, or that the birth actually took place in Fayette, PA where there might be a delayed birth record for her. None of those PA records are online. 1. [WVPRESTO] 1800's Christopher or Speelman Farmhouse
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: bowhunterscm Surnames: Christopher, Speelman Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.westvirginia.counties.preston/2764/mb.ashx Message Board Post: My family owns a farmhouse that was built in the late 1800's by either the Christophers or Speelmans. Levy(?) Speelman's parents built it in the late 1800's and their name was Christopher. Anyway, four of the Christophers' kids died of diphtheria at a very young age while they were building the house. As the story goes the youngest one was the first to go but before she died she wanted to see what her room would look like. So her father (a Christopher) carried her from the house they were living in down the hill to the unfinished farm house. He carried her up the stairs so she could see her room and then he showed her the rest of the house. And then later that night she died. As long as my family lived there they believed it was haunted by the ghost of that girl and we would like to find out what her name was, the family, or better yet a picture. But any information would be helpful. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: MargaretAnnKerr Surnames: Elsey, Elza, Thompson, Rivies, Wilson, Ray Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.westvirginia.counties.preston/2763/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I post this here to see if anyone has any additional information! As some of you may know, I have spent much time on the puzzle that is my American progenitor grandfather of the Elsey family, Edward! Edward Elsey was the father of my next grandfather in that line, Thompson Elza. We believe that Thompson was born about 1806 and that in 1821 Levi Coberly was appointed his guardian (document on file in Randolph County). Thompson's mother was Sarah "Sally" Thompson. It may be that Sarah died at childbirth as we have no record of her death. In 1811 (marriage certificate is on file), Edward Elsey married Cicily Rivies (who was believed to have been about 15-16 at the time) in Hardy County. As far as I can ascertain, there were 3 children born to this marriage: Margaret, Catharine and Dorotha. There is no marriage record for Margaret; Catharine was married to a Hiram Wilson and Dorotha was married to a William Ray. I am now in touch with a descendant of the last marriage through Dorotha & William's son, Jacob Ray. She sent me a photo of Jacob Ray and I find a resemblance from that photo to those I have of my next grandfather, Edward's grandson & Thompson's son, Solomon Elza. As I previously mentioned, there is no death record for Sarah "Sally" (Thompson) Elza, daughter of David & Anna (Dabney) Thompson. There is no death record for Edward Elsey (we just believe he had to die before Levi Coberly was appointed Thompson Elza's guardian in 1821). There exists a record to show Edward Elsey, along with Nicholas Elsey (believed to be his son just previous to Thompson), at a sale in 1819 in Hardy County. There is also no death record that can be found at present for Cicily Rivies, although there are census records to indicate that she lived a fairly long life. If anyone has any information of any kind regarding any of this, please contact me! I can be reached via email at: margbeckwith@verizon.net or by phone at: (304)636-6440. Any assistance will be greatly appreciated! Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
