    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: MDMAMA2841 Surnames: HANNA -- DERRY Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.westvirginia.counties.preston/760.4.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: What a heart-wrenching story! Thanks so much for sharing. Do you have any additional information on the HANNA family? Were they also of Preston County, WV? A member of my husband's family has been untraceable for the past 15 years of research. She shows up as head of household with two children in the 1820 PA Census for Georges twp., Fayette Co., PA -- which is just across the border from Preston Co., WV. Her name is PHOEBE DERRY (or HANNA). Although unconfirmed, I have always assumed that her maiden name was DERRY and that she married a man with the last name of HANNA. The opposite may be true, her maiden name might have been HANNA and she married a DERRY. Either way, she is a lady of mystery. Any insights into the HANNA family would be very much appreciated! Thanks, Joan Brown Derry MDMama2841@aol.com Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: dwagneriowa Surnames: Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.westvirginia.counties.preston/760.4.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Among my father's papers I found a manuscript which was a handwritten account of the Hanna and Corbly familes, with the following passage [misspellings are as they were written]: My History on My Mothers' Side - She was a grand daughter of the Rev John Corbly. A copy of a letter from Mr John Corbly a Baptist Minister to his friend in Philadelphia - dated Muddy Creek Sep 1 1792 (Whitley was called Muddy Creek at the time). "The following are the particulars of the destruction of my unfortunate family by the savages on the 10th day of May last 1791. Being my appointment to preach at one of the meeting-houses about a mile from my dwelling house, I set out with my loving wife and five children for public worship, not suspecting any danger. I walked behind a few rods with my bible in my hand meditating. As I was thus imployed on a sudden I was greatly alarmed by the frightful shriks of my dear family before me. I immediately ran to their relief with all possible speed vainly hunting a club as I ran. When within a few yards of them my poor wife observing me cried out to me to make my escape. At this instant an indian ran up to shoot me. I had to strip and by so doing out ran him. My wife had an infant in her arms which the indians killed and scalped after which they struck my wife several times but not bringing her to the ground. The indians who attempted to shoot me approached her and shot h! er through the body after which they scalped her. My little son about six years old they dispatched by sinking there hatchet into his brain. My little daughter four years old they in like manner tomahawked and scalped. My elder daughter attempted an escape by concealing her self in a hollow tree about six rods from the fatal scene of action. Observing the Indians retiring, as she supposed, she deliberately crept out from the place of her concealment when one of the indians who yet remained on the ground espying her ran up to her and with his tomahawk knocked her down and scalped her. But blessed be God she yet survives as dose here little sister whom the savages in like manner tomahawked and scalped. They are mangled to a shocking degree but the doctors think there are some hope of their recovery. When I supposed the indians gone I returned to see what had become of my unfortunate family whom also I found in the situation above described. No one my dear friend can fo! rm a true conception of my feelings at this moment. A view of a crime so shocking to humanity quite over come me. I fainted and was unconsciously boarn off by a friend who at that moment arrived to my relief. Thus my dear Sir I have given you a faithful though short narrative of the fatal castraphe amidst which my life is spared but for what purpose The Great Jehovah best knows. Oh may I spend it to the praise and glory of his grace who worketh all things after the counsel of his own will. The government of the world and its church are in his hands. I conclude with wishing you every blessing and subscribe myself your affectionate though afflicted friend and unworthy brother in the gospel ministry. John Corbly. I was curious if it comes by blood or marriage. Thank you for bringing up the conflict in the marriage date for Freeman Kelley. I kept forgetting to post on the board to see if anyone has the correct date. I got that date from a quote from Robert Ray Kelly printed in "Preston County, West Virginia History 1979" published by The Preston County Historical Society, Kingwood, West Virginia. I was not sure which date may be wrong, the birth date or the marriage date so I entered both on my tree as per the quote until I found the correct sourced dates. 3. Hello Sally, I am going to see if I can get Debra Bush to be a hostess. And if we can get Carol Houchin cleared, she could help. If not, I will. The first Sat. is fine with me. I wonder if Sat. from 1:00 to 3:00, with dessert and beverage, would appeal to more of the members. I can make dessert, or buy, cheaper than doing lunch. Two hostess, to make two cakes, would serve 30 people. I will either find a program, or do one. I would like to know ahead of time the different categories we need to fill for state and national. So the program will fall in one of those categories. April, would be good a time to come to Powell. 3. Hello Lisa, When I lived in Salt Lake City, Dr. Eldon Tucker Jr, attended the same church as I. I taught Sunday School, along with his daughter, Alice Tucker Boone. All 3 had come to SLC, UT from Morgantown. I know a little of the family, but no dates. Ada's Parents were William and Elizabeth Nine Wotring. Elizabeth Eve Nine was born to David and Margaret Martin Nine. Perhaps someone with the older Preston County History book, (the one worked on by Pauline Metheny Nuce, and Janice Sisler) could give you the information. Dr. Tucker told me he had written the history for the book, and had provided some pictures. ----- Original Message ----- From: <gc-gateway@rootsweb.com> To: <WVPRESTO-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, March 29, 2009 3:25 PM Subject: Re: [WVPRESTO] Looking for my ancestors > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Author: LisaTucker22 > Surnames: Wotring > Classification: queries > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.westvirginia.counties.preston/0.26.1.3/mb.ashx > > Message Board Post: > > I am also trying to fing out more about my grandmother, Ada L.
