There was also a John Cox/Cock in neighboring Fayette, PA. A John Cock was on the first tax list for Union twp. in 1785 and 1788. And, a John Cox was in Georges twp in 1787. Could be the same person. The spelling of names on the early tax lists can vary tremendously. There was also a John Cock in Luzerne twp 1787-1799. And a John Cox in Redstone, 1799. There was a McCray/McCrea family in Fayette during this same period, and a Groom/Grooms family in neighboring Greene. There were also McCreas in Monongalia. A Philip Cox signed an Appearance Bond for Alexander White 7 Sep 1799 in Monongalia. Also in Monongalia Co. court records there is a bit about a District Court held in Brooke County regarding a land dispute in 1800 but it references a patent given to Friend Cox for 400 acres on the Ohio River. Then later mentions that a John Cox was Hier at law of Friend Cox. Apparently John Cox, Jonathan Cox and Joseph Cox deeded that land to Charles Prather 6 Mar 1788. That seems to be about all I can find. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: janela56 Surnames: COX Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.westvirginia.counties.preston/2771.1.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: John Cox is said to have been born about 1750, but I have no proof of it. John was likely Baptist or Methodist. I am trying to work backwards from Bourbon County, KY, where my ancestor Philip Cox lived from 1800-1830 or so (he died in 1834, Montgomery Co., KY). There are apparently no records left that name Philip's parents. It's believed that he came from s.w. Pennsylvania or n.w. Virginia rather than NJ or NC. The Preston Co. record is the only one I've found for a Philip in n.w. VA. Two John Cox's that seem to be connected to Philip also moved to Bourbon County, KY. One was John Cox, married to Susannah Groom, and the other, John Cox, married to Margaret McCray. Ultimately I am trying to learn whether John & Margaret were Philip's parents, or what the relationship of the three men was. I don't know if any of them had land in Virginia. All lived in Kentucky by 1800, so that eliminates the Monongalia War of 1812 veteran/Sheriff. Philip Cox was born ~1779, if later census records give the age right. Author: jemwalsh Surnames: Cox Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.westvirginia.counties.preston/2771.1/mb.ashx Message Board Post: In Earl Core's first volume of "The Monongalia Story" there is mention on p. 294 of a John COX (quote from "the certificate book') "entitled to four hundred acres of land in Monongalia County on the waters of the Middle Branch of Three Fork Creek in the righ of said Coxes residence to include an improvement made thereon in the year 1775." Core notes this tract is in Preston County. Would your John Cox have been of age to own land in 1775? In Core's second volume there is a John Cox mentioned in association with Forks of the Cheat Baptist Church in Feb 1789 because Cox made accusations about the character of a Thomas Evans who was later admitted into the fellowship of this church. In 1815 perhaps another John Cox served briefly at the end of the War of 1812 and about five years later a John Cox became the Sheriff of Monongalia. Oren Morton's book gives a fairly thorough coverage of the early families of Preston yet there is no mention of the Coxes, so that suggests that family left early. His father was Joseph Kelly, who married Dorcas Browning, daughter of Meshack Browning (buried in Friendsville, Md. Allie Kelly Blaker had several sisters (I have photo of her with two of them). 3. Bev, These are the directions I wrote down in 1990 and may not be current. >From Terra Alta: Rt. 7 east to just before Hopemont State Hosp., turn right at Delano's Furniture (CR 88), cross railroad tracks, follow main road which becomes CR 94 (CR 88 bears off to the right), continue on main road to intersection with CR 104/96 (Freeport church will be on right), go right on CR 96 .5 mile to third gate (locked) on left side of road, cemetery is on this farm which is the site of heavy strip mining. NOTE: Mrs. Roger L. (Janet) Bohon 789-6397 has key to gate. She lives on right side of CR 104 at intersection with CR 94. 3. There are 35 Guthrie families living in WV in 1870 (when Leroy would have been abt. 3 yrs. old in the census). I didn't check each family because I am not even sure your Leroy was even born in WV. There is a marriage record online for Leroy Guthrie, 21, to Delia Elizabeth Fakery, 16, married in Preston Co., WV on Dec. 23, 1889. The age is about right to be the same Leroy Guthrie. Peter H. Fikey is shown on the license as father to Delia. Do you know anything about the locations where Leroy lived, was it WV or another State? Do you know any other family names associated with Leroy? ----- Original Message ----- From: "Ellis L. and Carole G.
