Wiley's History of Preston County (1882) is the first history book of Preston county, a foundation for all that have been done since. There is general history as well as information by district which includes genealogy of the early families in each. It was definitely worth my money. Hello, fellow listers! I'm wondering if anyone is going to Kingwood in the near future and, if so, would they be willing to do two obituary lookups for me? I'd be forever grateful to have the obits on the following people: ASA PHILLIPS, died April 22,1881, Independence, Preston Co.,WV ADAH PHILLIPS, died May 29,1905, Preston County. Will gladly reimburse any expense! Thanks in advance, Claudia Pell-Salvatore

Austin Coal and Coke Co. had a big mine at Austin in the late 1880s and early 1900s. I think the mine and the town are probably long gone. My father, Clyde Shay, was born at or near Austen in 1888. I think his father, Thomas Francis Shay, worked for the mine. Austin is shown and listed in the 1895 Atlas at: http://www.livgenmi.com/1895wv. According to the atlas, Austin's population was 269 in 1895.
