    3. There is a metered parking lot beside the Cultural Center that we used when we were there. You can buy hours on them. Just don't go when legislature is in town. Jean

    1. Re: [WV Preston County] Preston County info in state archives
    2. Jill, The WV Archives and History Library is located right beside the State Capitol building in the Cultural Center. The hours are: Monday-Thursday 9 a.m.-8 p.m. Friday & Saturday 9 a.m.-6 p.m. Sunday Closed I believe the parking spaces at the Cultural Center are assigned. Parking is available on the side streets but you may have to walk 2-3 blocks. You will need to sign in upon entering the library. You will also need to sign up for a microfilm reader if you use one. Staff members will help you get started with your research. The stacks are open and include: genealogies, county histories, cemetery inscriptions, census indexes etc. The card catalog will give you a call number for locating the books in the stacks as well as those that will need to be requested from upstairs storage. The microfilm room is located at the rear of the library reading room. Preston County microfilm includes: courthouse records thru about 1969, newspapers from 1866, census records thru 1920, personal property tax lists from 1821 etc. The personal property tax lists for 1818-1820 are in the first volume of land tax records which covers the years 1821-1837. The land tax (real estate) records are in bound volumes (thru 1935) and need to be requested from upstairs storage. What information in particular are you looking for? I may be able to give you some additional pointers about using the resources at the WV Archives if I knew what type information you are seeking. 3. I figured what the heck... I might as well respond to this conversation as well for other peoples bennifits... I live in NC and I visited Kingwood library this summer myself. When I first went into the library and they directed me to the genealogy information, I was rather disappointed... I just looked at the shelf in there and figured there was probably nothing useful in there for me because there wasn't a whole lot of material... WELLLLLLLLLLLLLLL I took the time since I had 4 hrs to meet with my dad upon arriving in Kingwood... I just grabbed a bunch of books and flashed thru pages and after a little bit I started finding all kinds of useful information. I even made copies of all the Morton pages that could possibly be related to my family. I took the time to view a few other Genealogy pages and found them interesting to. I was still there when my father got in town and after he came I still spent another 2 hours and I can't remember the ladies name in the library but she was very helpful and went out of her way to help me. I went back a couple days later and looked at more books before returning back home. They had cemetery records... birth... death... etc... Cathy **************************** I have to join Jim. Several years ago I got a lot of information at the Kingwood library. Unless they disposed of the books, and I doubt it, they must still be there somewhere. 2. Been reading the comments on the Preston Co Library. Don't overlook the Grafton, WV library not too far down the road. There is lots of good gen stuff to be found there and some of it covers Preston Co. The gen group of Taylor Co. has done a WONDERFUL job of purchasing and collecting a nice rack of STUFF. Hey, and while I am at it....don't overlook the Marion Co library in Fairmont, WV....another great collection...Lyle Corder

    3. My mother and I put together a book on the Deal/Deahl line. I believe she still has copies for sale. My parents just moved and I'm not sure of the new address but the forwarding should still work. It's: Eleanor Deal Rt 3 Box 248 Bruceton Mills, WV 26525 Ph# 304-379-9181 -- Vernon Deal vdeal@access.mountain.net

    1. Re: [WV Preston County] Deahl book
    2. Bev, I obtained my copy of "Deahl/Deal The History of the Descendants of Henry Deahl" from Eleanor Deal, Rt 3 Box 248, Bruceton Mills WV 26525 but don't recall the price. The family of William & Elizabeth (Deahl) Smith is included but I cannot provide information from a copyrighted source. The Kingwood library "don't have much of anything"?? Granted, their collection is small but I have found genealogies there that aren't available elsewhere. In fact, my last trip to the Kingwood library I had about $30 worth of copies made from their genealogy collection at 10¢ per page. I understand the Kingwood library also has copies of the manuscripts used in Dorothy Bonafield Snyder's first series of articles on Preston Co Civil War soldiers but I was unaware of this when I was there. If you want to check a larger collection, I suggest the WVU Library at Colson Hall in Morgantown. The stacks are open for browsing. Copies are 10¢ per page. Also, the WV Archives also has a large genealogy collection and the stacks are open.
