Bev I just took a chance, I had searched in Marion, Mon, and Preston co for the marriages. NOW and this is very important, if any marriagew took place beofre 1873, they will be in Allegheny Co Md. Its worth the phone call or the trip to Oakland to check out the marriages of those you cna't find elsewhere good luck

I know my great grandmother married there > and so did my grandmother? > thanks > Beverly Railey Walter Beverly, I called the Oakland County Clerk's office directly. They were more than eager to do any look-ups I asked for. Very nice people there!! The gentleman who found my grandparents record there seemed to be genuinely as thrilled as I was that he was able to find it! I also ordered Book 1 Garrett County Marriage Records 1872-1886 from the Garrett County Historical Society and I'm more than willing to do look-ups for anyone wanting them. This book was about $5.50. I asked them about any marriage publications they had for the years starting in 1850 but referred me to Allegheny County for that time frame since Garrett was a part of Allegheny. I do believe the historical society has other types of publications available at much higher prices. For anyone interested in what they have, here's the address: The Garrett County Historical Society, Inc. P.O.Box 28 Oakland, Maryland 21550 As I said, I'm more than willing to do marriage lookups in the publication I have! Just send me, privately so as not to tie up the list, the names of the bride and groom! Merry Christmas All!! Claudia Pell-Salvatore in Northern Kentucky

I've found MD marriages from as far away as Indiana, Alleghey and Cambria Counties, PA. Your comment of "no wait, no questions asked" is probably more realistic than the issue of money or blood tests. Blood tests and license are fairly recent requirements and Preachers would marry a couple for little or nothing. I always check the birthdate of the first born child against the marriage date of any MD marriages for out-of-staters ;-) ----- Original Message ----- From: <My2greys2@aol.com> To: <WVPRESTO-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: December 15, 2001 2:26 PM Subject: Re: [WV Preston County] Prestonians marrying in Oakland MD | In a message dated 12/15/2001 2:02:33 PM Eastern Standard Time, | Tiggerpunt@aol.com writes: | | | > If any of you are looking for the records of the marriage license of your | > ancestors who you thought may have been married in Preston county, but | > haven't found them yet, Check out the Garrett Co Md Court house. | > Oakland Maryland was and probably still is the marriage capital of the East | > | > Coast and Preston Co WV. How interesting! My grandparents who lived in Preston County were married in Oakland Maryland in 1879. If any of you are looking for the records of the marriage license of your ancestors who you thought may have been married in Preston county, but haven't found them yet, Check out the Garrett Co Md Court house. Oakland Maryland was and probably still is the marriage capital of the East Coast and Preston Co WV. There was not a 3 day waiting period or blood test in the early times, With money be in short supply, most weddings in Preston Co and the Northern part of WV were performed in Oakland. After 2 years of searching, I found my grandparents were married in Oakland in 1927. The record records the names of the bride and groom, their ages, the towns in which they lived and the name of the minister. It did not list the parents names. The B&O train went from various stops in preston co to Oakland. Among them were Masontown, Kingwood, Tunnelton, Newburg, Rowlesburg and of course Terra Alta and Aurora.

Janice & Dianne, It was coats@hotmail.com who submitted the Garlock query. When replying to a message not directly posted to the Preston Co mailing list, it is best to also Cc: it to the submitter's e-mail address. The "two earlier history books" referred to below are apparently Wiley's 1882 History of Preston Co and Morton's 1914 history of Preston Co with PCHS's 1979 History of Preston Co being the third. Hi Janice, I am not looking for a Garlock. You have me mixed up with someone else. I will be sending $$ for the tombstone books. My people are at Mt Israel and Mt Zion but who knows. I am also trying to get my local society to approve the History book for our library so I may want another one of those. Are the first two that are talked about in the forward the two Morton books?
