I just found a weird reading in the 1850 Preston census: William Snider age 30 Martha E. Davis 31 Albert SNider 5 Adaline Snider 4 Alcinda SNider 3 Ashford Snider 1 This is in the right area of the county. Had they not married, or did she give her maiden name to the census taker? Jean

I do not know if that is my particular William GEORGE. Mine was born 3/17/1833, according to tombstone. However, he had a brother James and Edward who immigrated at about the same time that he did. According to the 1870 census, Preston County, Edward was born about 1829, Scotland. His wife was Eupehna b. 1830. They had the following children William age 16, James 14, Mary 11, Edward 8, Robert 6, Thomas 4, and John,2. All but John (Maryland) was born in Scotland. In the census of 1880, for Lonaconing MD, there is a Mary GEORGE, widowed, born abt. 1830. She is living with the following children, William 24, Edward 19, Robert 17, Thomas 16, and John 12. Next door is James GEORGE 23, married to a Margaret, age 20. All by Mary are shown, she could have been married by then. I believe that this is the same 1880 and 1870 families. My grandfather has a family bible in which the following appears; This bible presented to Robert GEORGE - Lonaconing Dec 30th, 1877 by the ****. presented to Nenevah GEORGE - Horseshoe Turn, by Robert GEORGE -1880 presented to John W. GEORGE by Nenevah GEORGE - Breedlove, W. Va. -1893 It appears to me that this family moved back and forth between Preston County and Lonaconing, Md. Also several years ago, I visited Lonaconing. I went to the "Old Coney Cemetery" I saw the graves of a few GEORGES. I did not know if we were related in some fashion. Then when I figured that they were in my tree, I returned, to my horror, the graves were not there. I had begun to think that I had dreamt the whole family. There had been a lovely wrought iron fence etc around their little plot. I left and went to Cumberland Genealogical Society to do further research. I happened to look in their "Allegany County Rural Cemetery" book that they had researched several years before and quess what? My GEORGE family was in that grave yard. All of the facts were there, and I did not dream up. I purchased the book and immediately went to Lonaconing for answers to this mystery. I asked at several business for the "town historian", whoever that may be. They gave me the name of a Mrs. Atkinson and her address. I went to her door. She was kind and helped to find a little more about them. She told me that the cemetery is cared for by a volunteer who does what he wants to do with it. Apparently, he decided that since the GEORGES had no apparent family members left, he would just get rid of the tombstones. He actually removed the fences and tomstones, mowed it over and they "planted" a completely new family there! If it weren't for that book, this family would be erased! Also, I believe that James GEORGE living in Lonoconing was married to a Margareta C. Arke, daughter of Henry Arke. I found her death record and the age fits etc. I would like to know more about her as well.
Does anyone know how land and property taxes were collected. Did people go to the county auditor to pay their taxes or did the auditor come to them. Since courthouse records were destroyed, I have searched the land records. I find that the Sniders paid their taxes in clusters. As I recall, tax payment records were arranged alphabetically in the county. But, it appeared that many Sniders paid them on the same day. So did they live in close proximity to one another or did they come into town together to pay their taxes on a certain day. Does anyone know how that worked? Deborah, I am interested in your info on William GEORGE that was born in Scotland & married Ninny PAW. In the 1880 census of Preston Co., I have a William GEORGE, age 48 born Scotland; wife Luina, age 38 born MD; James GEORGE, age 33 born Scotland living with my Alexander FORSYTH born Scotland & three of the children of Alexander. Then in the deeds of Preston Co., vol 48, page 351 is the following: Alex Forsythe et el to James & William GEORGE -- made 2 March 1880 between Alex Forsythe of the 1st part & James George & William George of the 2nd part for sum of eleven hundred & fifty dollars now paid the receipt whereof is hereby acknowledged, the said Alex. Forsythe (together with Jane Arnott & Mary Forsythe) did grant & bargain..... This land was on Wolf Run & gives landmarks. Mary Forsythe was the mother of Alex [Alexander] & Jane may have been the sister of Alexander [this I have not been able to prove. I am wondering if there is any relationship between Alexander Forsyth/Forsythe & William George. Did they know each other in Scotland? Is there any info or thoughts you can shed on this? Looking forward to hearing from you. Barb Kelley in FL wvmountain2@juno.com ________________________________________________________________ GET INTERNET ACCESS FROM JUNO! The earliest record that I have for him is that of 1870 census Preston County, Union District, pg 198. He is living with Mary 52 - MD., Ninevah 27-MD., and- Zacharia 23 - MD. I also have his will and propate record, and have been to his grave in the "Old Eglon Cemetery". In 1880, he is still living in Preston County, with his wife Melena. I suspect that his wife was using her middle name at this time, due to the fact that their daughter was actually Mary Ninevah of above. Their son, Zachariah Taylor shows up on later cenusus with different wives. John P and his wife state that they were born in MD as well as their parents and the two children. So they must have ties to that area. On the marriage records of Preston County, Mary Ninevah is listed as Ninny PAW, she married William O. GEORGE who was from Scotland. That is about all that I have been able to find proof of. According to John P. PAUGH's tombstone, he was born 4/27/1813 and died 11/22/1888. Someone told me that he also had children Enoch and Isabella, born earlier. No proof on that as yet either. Thanks for anything you can find and share. Deborah
