The naming pattern from Germany seemed to be that they had their first name, their middle name & were just about always called by their middle name. In some instances, several of them would have the same first name in the same family. First names were used for legal reasons. Some of this we learned through taking a genealogy class. I got this out of my Morton's History of Preston Co., Volume I. Christopher Dennis, a native of Germany, came to Glade Farms about 1820. The following is his family: DENNIS, Christopher m. ??? 1. I just found these names from the Morton's History of Preston County someone sent me. I have a John Dennis that was born in Germany. The year I'm not sure of. He was my grandmother father. My grandmother was born in 1873 in Washington County, PA, not far from Preston County, W.VA. Listed also on her death certificate is her mother Jessie White. She had 3 sisters and one of the sister's death certificate listed George Dennis as the father and Mae Burns as the mother. I was told that many Dennis families named their boys John and then they used their middle names. Big puzzle. I sure would like to make some progress on this branch. My father is 89 and in a nursing home and I would love to find out something about this mother's family for him. Carol

The map ledgend says it was surveyed in 1905: topography by A. M. Walker, assistant J. R. McMillen. Culture (man-made objects) revised in 1923 by E. I. Ireland. Reprinted 1942. Two buldings are shown on the map, both between the railroad, which it labels the Baltimore & Ohio, and the river. Today a substantial sawmill occupies the site. The old map is the Kingwood Quadrangle, 15-minute series, which the USGS no longer prints. Hope this is of some help. Gary
