There is an article on John Jennings (may be the one you have) in the book Barbour County Another Look. It is too long to include here. If you do not have this send me your address & I will copy and mail it to you. It states he was born in Gloucestershire, England in 1752 or 53 and states Isaiah used Janes. It lists 3 generations. The book was published in 1979 by the Historical Society of Barbour County Karen ----- Original Message ----- From: WVPRESTO-D-request@rootsweb.com Sent: Saturday, March 16, 2002 8:10 AM To: WVPRESTO-D@rootsweb.com Subject: WVPRESTO-D Digest V02 #91 Content-Type: text/plain WVPRESTO-D Digest Volume 02 : Issue 91 Today's Topics: #1 [WV Preston County] Re: Deal/Deahl [bigdeahl@yahoo.com] #2 Re: [WV Preston County] West Virgi [Jane McCann Walsh <jmwalsh@hhs.net] #3 Re: [WV Preston County] Re: Deal/D [Tiggerpunt@aol.com] #4 [WV Preston County] Richard Labomb [farside@nwi.net] #5 [WV Preston County] url Rev. Hi, Janice, Seems I've shared this with you at an earlier point but maybe someone else will spark on this and we'll both end up with something more. I have part of an article and a photo of this John Jennings in his later life. Looks like he was blind and very very old. Some of his descendants lived in Moatsville, Barbour Co., just south of Taylor and near the Preston Co. border. This is where he was buried. Somewhere I have a photo of his recently placed grave marker with, I believe, a DAR notation. According to the article, John Jenning's brother, Isaiah used the surname of Janes. I've noted that Jennings in England might have been Jeannes. And, I've been told that one of the Jennings who used Janes had said that she was "returning" to their original surname. I'm interested in both the JANES and JENNINGS surnames as I have two ancestors born 1735-1755 whose maiden names were Janes and Jennings, respectively, and later lived in the area of the SW PA - NW VA border circa 1800. Regards, Jane

A Henry DEAL went to Preston from Somerset about 1830 according to Owen Morton who wrote a "History of Preston County, West Virginia, Volume I". Henry had a brother named Simon who settled in Canada. Henry's son Henry, Jr. located in Reno, Preston Co. His son Jasper N. spelled the name DEAHL and was a "professor in the State University," presumably WVU circa 1914 when this book was published. Morton finished with "Jacob and Andrew J. remained in Pleasant." That's on p.339. Elsewhere on p. 425, Morton says that Henry was born in 1791; that Jacob m. Sarah Burke; that Henry Jr. married second Jennie Hovatter Cox --- nothing on first wife; George was killed by R.R. circa 1877; Simon m. Catharine Sliger. JOhn went to PA. Andrew J. m. The following list is of persons in 1850/2 who were still waiting or were not granted a pension. Welden Baswell awaiting further proof William Boswell for proof of two credible witnesses John Lap (Sap) awaiting further proof Susannah Cupp, widow of Leonard For deficient proof of marriage Mary Feathers, widow of Jacob, waiting further proof Elizabeth Orr, widow of John No claim, Services of her husband were rendered after the Revolution. Janice, According to the Rev. War Pension file on Jacob Feather 1759-1832, he served at the surrender of Cornwallis. Mary, his widow, swore as part of her affidavit, that "...Jacob Feather lived in the City of Philadelphia at the time he entered the army as aforesaid, that she understood from the said Jacob Feather that he was in the following battles towit, Trenton, Princeton, and at Yorktown at the surrender of Cornwallis and she believes that he served as above stated, that the said Jacob Feather was about applying for a pension when he was taken sick and died and that she has heard her husband the said Jacob and Daniel Martin of this county a pensioner frequently conversing about the different battles that they had been in together during the War of the Revolution" I don't know who else was at the surrender of Cornwallis, but Jacob Feather and Daniel Martin were. Daniel Martin's pension application also states that he (Daniel) served at the surrender of Cornwallis. Mary Feather applied for her pension May 9, 1834 and finally received her pension of $70.55 per year commencing the 4th day of March 1848. She died Oct 22, 1860 at the age of 91. Billie Lovett
