I'm a descendent of Peter, Conrad's brother. I would like any information on Conrad though if you get any. Good luck in your search.

I had also seen the information from Morton's book. It has a lot of good information. It looks as if I'll have to find where Conrad and Lydia lived in MD to see where that line ends up. Thanks again, Ken

Surnames: Whetsell Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/IEC.2ACE/770.1 Message Board Post: Ken, I have a John and Mary (Troxall) Whetsell who came to Preston County from Frederick, MD around 1800. John was the founder of the Whetsell settlement. Their third child, Conrad (b. 1794) married a Lydia Calvert. Conrad and Lydia moved to MD and since my information is from the History of Preston County (published 1882 and 1914) the history doesn't follow them or even mention where in MD they went.
Hello Bev, Oop! I spelled Lizzie's last name the Preston Co., way. The Pa. women spelled it Brahm. Found Lizzie's marriage with the spelling of Brahm In Preston Co., Marriages Vol. 1, page 90. There were Brethren Church Ministers by the name of James and John Freeland. Another was John Freeland B: 23 1842, died 27 Feb 1921. This is probably the one who did the marriage of Arminta. He served the Pleasant Grove Brethren (Dunker) Meeting House (Church) I am a shirt-tail cousin to Freeland, Ridenour via the Philip Bucklew descendants (Susanna Bucklew Wolfe) My Mother was Brethren. Beverly, I just looked at the 1900 census at Genealogy.com. John and Arminta are listed with several children. I try to interpret the information and send it to you. Jim Sypolt: jsypolt@bellsouth.net Jim Sypolt's Family Genealogy http://www.angelfire.com/wv2/jsypolt/index.html
Sorry Beverly, I do have some Messengers in my Line, but not John J. or Arminta.
I appreciate the prompt response. Anyone following John J. Messenger's line out there? It would be helpful to know if he and Arminta had children too. Beverly
There is a Armina A. Messenger 1866-1929 buried in the Terra Alta Cemetery. John J. Messenger 1862-1948 is also buried there. Both are in section 210. Jim Sypolt jsypolt@bellsouth.net Jim Sypolt's Family Genealogy http://www.angelfire.com/wv2/jsypolt/index.html
Oops, I sent too fast. My Janice Cale Sisler books are in Garrett Co. Would someone please try to find where Arminta, wife of John J. Messenger was buried. I don't have death date, but marriage was 1885. Thank you very much. Beverly
Beverly, Volume II of Janice Cale Sisler's "In Remembrance" shows Arminta buried in Terra Alta Cemetery. Record reads as follows: "Messenger, Arminta A., 1866-1929" Also: "Messenger, John J., 1862-1948" both are listed in section 210 of the diagram in the back of the book. I hope this helps. Me again-- I've found both Arminta b. 1866 and Lizzie 1864 Braham in familysearch.org. Lizzie's parents are listed as being Hugh Braham and Annie Mifflin. The information Rosalie gave me had Mifflin on the marriage license for Arminta. Both Arminta and Lizzie were born in PA and married in Terra Alta, one in 1885 and one in 1884. I'm guessing they are sisters. Does anyone have information on a Hugh Braham? He may be a brother to a Preston County Braham. His father was Samuel, born in Tyrone Ireland. I think we're on to something, just need a connection... as usual! Thanks for your patience. Beverly Walter
Rosalie, I took another look at my transcription of the license from the Charleston archives and it does say Brahm. I have just been inserting the extra a because I'm so familiar with Brahams, must have figured it was a typo. This is a big help. I think the county might be Juniata for that other Brahm. The other thing I'm struggling with though, is that, the license said she married at the bride's home. But maybe I was just assuming it was Terra Alta. John W. Freeland married them, so I just don't know... Thanks Beverly
Hi Rosalie, Where did you see Lizzie as Brahm? On her marriage license it was Braham. This could be a big tip! Thanks Beverly
I'm wondering now. Where would the given name Warden have come from? Has anyone seen this circa 1904 in Preston County? Hey- I'm stretching to figure this one out! Beverly
Bev. Just ran across Nicholas while doing another research. Nicholas Braham, age 38, Married to Rachel Freeland, age 27 on 13 June 1896. Both born in Preston Co. WV, Both residing in Preston Co., WV ( Preston Co. Marriages Vol. 2, page 75.) Note that Lizzie spelled her last name Brahm and no place of birth was given. Only one other person married in Preston Co. with that spelling was an Arminta Brahm, to John J. Messinger, 1885 She was born, Mifflin, Juanita Co., Pa. All other persons married 1869 to 1900 used the Braham spelling, giving both their birth and residences as Preston Co. This may be a clue for research. Rosalie
Does anyone know if there is ever a Freeland picnic or reunion? Beverly Railey Walter
Karen, Lizzie is a real puzzle. I have so little information on her. Supposedly she was born in September, 1864 in Pennsylvania. The 1900 census shows her in Terra Alta with husband and 4 boys. It gives her parents' place of birth as being PA also. She was married to James William Freeland on June 29, 1884 at her parents' home in Terra Alta. John W. Freeland performed the ceremony. Janice Cale Sisler said that the license was issued at the instance of William Paugh wih a letter from the father. I'm not sure what that means since she was over 18 yrs old. Lizzie had two children, Ernest and Louise, who died young and are both in Freeland cemetery. She also had three sons, Earl, Harry and Warden King Freeland (my grandfather.).She raised stepsons, Floyd and George, as James William had been married prior to Virginia F. Sisler prior to the marriage of Lizzie and Jim. Lizzie Mae Braham Freeland is buried in Terra Alta with a marked grave, 1864-1912. She died of cancer. Anyway, I'm still wondering who her parents are. I was guessing that they were James Braham married to Sarah Paugh, but I don't even know why! My grandfather, who was 8 or 9 when Lizzie died said he thought her family had had a bottling factory in Fairmont, but I think that was just another of his stories. He said his middle name came from a doctor. I found no Dr. King, but it was his grandmother's maiden name, Louisa (Koenig) King Freeland. James William Freeland later married Virginia Spurgeon, who had a son Frank. I remember visiting him in Brandonville. Any clues to follow are greatly appreciated. This remains a puzzle. Beverly
