I didn't know your Dad real well, but Bill and Pat know me. Kitty's daughter, and I am about the same age as "Popcorn"; do you remember him? Also, David in Florida knows me, but I haven't heard from him for a long time. I used to visit him years ago, but haven't seen him since Uncle Don died, I think. It's great to know you're looking into this, and I'm wondering if someone in the Bucklew family might be able to help. Many of our ancestors were preachers, and someone may have a bible, or records of marriages performed by them. Perhaps Joseph A. Young's parents would be shown on a marriage record. Let me know when you find a death cert. as there should be one of those, as you say. One thing I've run into is Mennonites in my line from Pennsylvania, and some say they didn't always conform to the civil authorities as far as record keeping, and perhaps this is the problem; but it wouldn't surprize me to find the Youngs came from Pa. Another place I'm looking into is central NYS as I've seen a lot of our family names there, around 1790. Just can't connect them to WV. Best of luck and hang in there, Kathy

I am checking into seeing if there is a death certificate for him at the state courthouse. They started collecting them there in 1917 and since Joseph died in 1925 we might get real lucky. It would be stored in the archived section and have to be pulled by hand. My grandfather was Guy Wesley Young son of John Wakefield. Mt dad was the oldest child of Guy and Clara's, Kenneth Guy Young. I was hoping someone might know where to find an obit for Joseph since it might give more specifics on where he was born or any siblings he might have had. Sharon
I'm having some luck. I have now found Lizzie Brahm (not Braham as I thought) Freeland's parents having gone from PA to Terra Alta to Fairmont. No wonder I couldn't find them! Lizzie Freeland and her sister, Arminta Brahm Messenger are buried in Terra Alta cemetery. Does anyone know if there are any records from the cemetery? Still need a death certificate or more info on my Lizzie, my great grandmother. Thanks. Beverly

As recorded by tombstone in Whiteley Chapel Cemetery. (Nannie Fordyce informs the Bible record gives 1765 as the date of his birth). John Fordyce (#10) b. Sept. 17, 1775 at Morris Cty., N.J. m. Elizabeth Gerard, d/o Justus and Rachal Corbly Gerard, d/o John Corbly, a preacher b. ? 25, 1733 and emigrated to Va. and from there to western Pa. There is a story about John Corbly when, as a preacher, on the way to church at the Fort one Sunday, noticed they had forgotten his Bible. "Since they were near to the Fort, Eliz. and the children continued on their way while Rev. Corbly returned home to get the Bible. In his absence his wife and children were attacked by a small band of Indians. The son who had been in the lead of the little group started running towards the fort for help. The Indian braves tried to catch him but his dog turned on them and forced them back. Eliz. was killed and scalped and the little daughter she carried in her arms was also murdered. One of the twin daughters hid herself in a hollow tree. The other was scalped and left for dead. The little girl in hiding, thinking the indians had left! , came out into the opening where she was attacked and scalped by an indian and left for dead. Rev. Corbly arrived at the scend a few moments before the men from the fort. He was unarmed and tried to find a piece of wood to use against the attackers. Before he was able to find anything, as it all happened so fast two indians saw him and he was forced to flee towards the fort, where he ran into the party his small son had brought. The indians were driven off, and they retrieved the body of Eliz., she had been thrown across the back of an indian's horse and her shirt had been ripped from her dress.

Hi Joaquina, Among my older relatives, shirttail cousin is a colloquialism for a distant cousin or more than third cousin. Sometimes, a cousin by marriage to some people. It was used by some folks in rural Preston Co., WV and Garrett Co. MD, when I was growing up, which is many long years ago. Rosalie
What is a shirtail cousin?
