I have the Fortney book and I looked up Mahala Pell Fortney. I found only one: Mahala Martha Pell, married Rev. Daniel R. Fortney. (No marriage date.) He was born Mrch 18,1816, Reedsville, Preston Co.,WV, died June 24, 1902. Mahala was born July 19, 1817, died March 16, 1888 and is buried at Old Fortney Cemetery, Reedsville, Preston County, WV. Is this the Mahala you are looking for?? The book has a picture of her husband, Daniel Fortney. If you wish, I can try to scan it and send it to you. He was a Methodist preacher in Reedsville for over 45 years. Their children were: Francis (Frank) Asberry Fortney, born Jan. 23, 1837, Preston Co.,WV Amisiah Pell Fortney, born Setp. 1839, Preston Co.,WV Emma Fortney, born 2841 Isaiah Kirk Fortney, born March 1845, Preston Co.,WV William Fairfax Fortney, born March 1845, Preston Co.,WV John W. Fortney, born ca. 1860 I have an extensive Pell database but I have no information on this Mahala Pell. Have no idea who her parents were and the book doesn't state who they were either. On Emily Squires Fortney, I found this in the same book: Barton W. Fortney, Sr., born Nov. 13,1813, Reedsville, Preston Co.,WV, died April 22, 1896, WV. On July 2, 1842, he married Emily Squires, born April 11, 1817, died June 5, 1887. Their children were: Leah Ann Fortney, born July 10,1843 David Harrison Fortney, born Feb. 24,1846 Barton W.Fortney Jr, born Sept 1847 Josiah Fortney, born March 1, 1848 Andrew Jackson Fortney, born Feb. 18, 1850 Mary Samantha Fortney, born Aug. 11, 1852 Daniel R.Fortney, born May 16, 1854 Virginia A. Fortney, born March 17,1856 Emily J. Fortney, born 1861 Thomas Squires Fortney, born Oct. 28,1863 All children were born at Reedsville, WV. I hope this helps you. I'm interested in whether you are researching any more Pells. Let me know if I can be of further help and please feel free to email me privately. Good Hunting! It is a picture of John W. Stone, my great grandfather, taken on his 89th birthday in 1927. The picture was taken in Reedsville and the buildings in the picture are still standing (well almost). There are approx. 120 men, women and children in the picture. The only ones I can identify are John W. and his second wife Mollie who was also married two other times. A duplicate in smaller form is in the historical museum there. While attending the Stone Reunion on June 30th, someone believed that they had seen the picture in a church or community house and believed that the names of the people in the picture were identified. Does anyone know anything about this? Or if you are reasearching the Stones in Preston Co. would like to compare notes if we have not already met. Have information on John's children from his first wife. Those children were placed and raised in an orphanage ! in Ohio and were never in Preston County. Please contact me with any information.
Yep, there is a very nice cemetery there. I visit it every year when we have our family picnic, as it is right next to the Community Building there. It is very well kept. The cemetery was started by Jacob M. Thomas, my g-g-grandfather. Steve, From Janice Cale Sisler's "In Remembrance Vol. II" book on Preston County Cemetery listings, there is a Thomas Cemetery at Salem Community, Brandonville, WV. It is located off of County Route 26/7 near the North Preston Farmer's Club Community Building. One of the latest burials there was in 1977 that I saw as I quickly went through the book. Hi Bill, Yes, I found the census report also, so we know Mahala knew the Friend family at a very young age. However, since Mahala married in 1864, age 21, and had her last child at age 43, died two years later, it doesn't seem that she could have married twice. My thinking is that her mother was married to a Browning when Mahala was born but maybe later SHE married a Ringer. Thus Mahala may have used the surname of Ringer later in life and the children knew her by both names. OR, is it possible that Andrew married twice and to two women named Mahala? This doesn't really fit either or the family would have know of two graves. Nothing indicates this latter possibility. I don't know. Right now it is all pure conjecture, but one of those "quiz-lers" I can't seem to forget about. Oh, thank you too for the Twigg information. Pat-T
Pat Thompson, On the 1850 Allegany Co. Census that is on online has the following. Friend, Andrew Age 53 Sarah 52 Andrew C. 18 Browning, Mahela 6 This might help. Janice , By chance, would you or George have any listing for a Mahala Ringer b. 1843 d. 1888. She married, in Garrett County, Maryland to Andrew Friend. However, I can't find her family. On her marriage record she is listed as Mahala Browning, but in the family bible and several obits for her children, she is listed as Mahala Ringer. It is just a mystery that I would like to solve, so even though this is a very long shot, I thought I would ask. Many thanks, Pat-T
George - In order to save a great deal of duplication - what items are you searching for on each of the three? It's possible I'm stuck at the same places.
