    1. [WV Preston County] SMITH FAMILY DEAHL FAMILY in PC
    2. finding my roots in Preston County is like finding a needle in a haystack especially when the name is William Smith. The records at the courthhousr in PC say that he was buried in Corinth in 1909, but it doesnt say where, Were there every any cemeteries in Corinth, or was this a case of being buried under the old tree in the back yard. I do know that he and his wife Elizabeth lived in Corinth and had 12 children Some of those names were. Charles, Daniel, William jr, Maude Della, Daisy, Bertha, Ethelinda, Simon, Julia, Mary, George, and Lucy. His wifes maiden name was DEAHL. After the death of William, she moved the children to Austen to operated a boarding house for the coal mines there. Is there anyone who is researching any of these names? Does any of this sound familiar to anyone? If so, please get in touch with me. Tiggerpunt@aol.com Thanks Bev

    1. Re: [WV Preston County] oh no!!!! Harsh
    2. Hi Rosalie, My information is essentially the same as you quote. Some of it came from a pamphlet, "The Harsh Family of Northern West Virginia and Allied Swisher,Wotring and Stemple families" (1996 Melissa Ireland, Phillippi WV). Booklet by Melissa Ireland indicates he (George Frederick Harsh) died after 1804. Lived near Hagerstown on Conococheague River moved to Preston Co. abt. 1788 with son, George (Frederick--cs), Jr.. Immigrated to America Sept. 25, 1751 Name Hirsh/Harsh means Stag. George Sr served in the Revolutionary War in the Philadelphia Company as a private enlisting on 7/20/1776. George evidently arrived from Germany to the Port of Philadelphia then moved down to MD before pushing on to eastern VA.(??--cs) The family was traditionally Lutheran and was associated with the Lutheran Church at Aurora WV for many years. The St Paul Lutheran Church was founded at Aurora about 1787. George Frederick Harsh Jr. name appears in their records with the old German spelling of "Friedrich" and his wifes name as " Catarine" They had brought their son Johann ( John ) there for baptism on 7/1/1801. (ref." Aurora Documents" by Karl Gower-- translation of Luth. Church records) ===== This quote makes me think that Geo. Fred. Harsh, SR., also came to Preston Co., WV. I know that a grain of salt is probably wise, given the source <g> src. Morton's Hist of Pres Co WV Frederick Harsh came from Germany, and in 1788 settled on the east portion of the site of Aurora. Only his son Frederick, a justice, seems to have remained. ====== src. Pres. Co WV history on WV Footsteps http://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/wv/wv-footsteps/2001/v01-28.txt Frederick Harsh, or Hersh, had four sons: Frederick (who was a squire), Jacob, Andrew, and Daniel, very large, stout men, one of whom could lift 1100 pounds. ===== I did not know about the other "Frederick Harsh". I am soooo glad to have the information about the comparison of signatures. Thank you!! Do you happen to know which documents these were and where one might access them??? Also, I had corresponded with Alice Proudfoot in the early 1970's, but about our Wotring connection. She is sorely missed. I would truly appreciate your Harsh descendant information. Thanks for the offer! Warm regards, Carolyn my line: -> George Frederick Harsh b. abt. 1726 Ger. m. Christiana (unk) ---->Geo. Frederick Harsh b. abt. 1770 m. It mentions a brother, Eugene Wheeler, of Masontown. I have been unable to find any information on a Eugene Wheeler, however, I found a T.E. Wheeler in Masontown in the 1920 census. Could this be Eugene? I would appreciate any help you can give me as this is the last missing child of the David Wheeler family.

    3. Hello Shupe, Am not clear just which Harsh you are researching. I have this information " George Frederick Harsh immigrated to America on Sep. 25, 1751. The name was also spelled Hirsch, the German noun for stag." His son George lived near Conococheague River, Washington Co. Md. before moving to Aurora, Preston Co. WV about 1788. Information from: "Allegheny Passage" by Emmert F. Bittinger. He credits his information to Alice Proudfoot and Beverly Harsh Henshaw. Bittinger also makes a foot note that Mrs. Henshaw distinguishes the above immigrant George Frederick Harsh, from one of the same name who immigrated Nov.2 1752 by means of comparing signatures. I have names of some descendants. Rosalie

    3. This agrees with the info I have on "our" Whitehair. My surprise was that his wife, Maria Appelonia was not listed as being with him. I thought they had come together. They were married some 5 years earlier in Grossbundenbach, Pfalz. It would be interesting to know when she came. Just thought I'd share it with the other Harsh researchers on this List. BTW, it was thought that GFH immigrated in 1751---the ship date needs to be checked to confirm either source.
