I am researching the Roots Family in Tucker and Preston County West Virginia and Garrett County, Maryland. I have put a time line together about the family. They were married to Rineharts and Gauers. If you are interested, here it is: Time line for Root Family Month/Day Year Activity February 1 1793 Eva Elizabeth Rinehart born in Aurora, VA, now WV. November 20 1793 Edmund Root born in Massachusetts, son of Martin and Lois Root. Younger brother is Linus. 1810 Massachusetts census shows Martin Root family there. 1820 Virginia census shows Martin Root family there in Lewis County, probably near Buckhannon (now WV). Prior to 1822 Edmund and E. Root married. No record of the marriage has been found. June 17 or 27 1822 George R. Root born to Edmund and E. Root. Maybe in Lewis County, VA according to Charlene Root. George lists Edmund and E. Root as parents in applying for second marriage license in Tucker County, WV, August 9 1822 Martin Root, father of Edmond, dies in a fit in Lewis County, VA. Martin Root was veteran of the Revolutionary War. He fought in the Battle of Lexington. 1827 Susanah Rinehart is born. She is Eva Elizabeth's Rinehart's first cousin. 1830 Maryland census shows a Eve Root with four children in Allegany County (included Garrett County at that time). Children include: 3 daughters (0-5 years, 5-10 years, and 15-20 years), and one son (5-10 years) in Allegany County (includes Garrett County at that time). Age of son consistent with age of George Root who would have been about 8 years old. Husband Edmond Root presumed dead within last five years. Eve Root's neighbor was her father, George Rinehart. She must have moved back to father's Maryland farm with children when Edmond Root died. 1834 Emily Lea Ann Miller born. (1880 census would place her date of birth in 1836, but tombstone shows 1834 as date of birth) 1840 Maryland census shows Eva Root there with three children in Allegany County. One child had left or died. March 1840 George Rinehart, father of Eva Root, died. in Sunnyside, Allegany County, Maryland. 1845 (est) Jonathan Root, the oldest of four children, born to George and Susanah Root. Susanah would be a first cousin, once removed to husband George Root, if Eva Elizabeth Rinehart was his mother. January 22 1847 David Edmond Root, second child, born to George and Susanah Root. December 1849 Martha J. Root, third child and first daughter, born to George and Susanah Root. 1850 Virginia census shows George Root in Preston Country with wife Susan (24), Jonathan (5), David (4), and Martha (under 1 year). August 15 1856 Caroline Root, fourth child, born to George and Susanah Root in Preston County, VA. No additional information available on Caroline. March 25 or 27 1858 Laura Ellen Root, the youngest and last child, born to Susanah and George Root in Horse Shoe Run, Preston County, VA. 1860 Federal Census Index (page 157) shows George R. Root living in Horse Shoe Run, Preston County. 1860 Federal Census Index shows Eva Elizabeth Root living in Allegany County, Maryland. 1863 George Root had 136 1/4 acres in Horseshoe Run. August 7 1864 George R. Root (42 years) and son Jonathan Root (19 years) put on Union Militia Rolls as Privates in Rowlesburg/Grafton, WV. They were both brought in on Aug. 4, 1864 by a squad of men. Their unit was the 173 Mil 26 Mil and their company was J. H. Shafer "D" Company. George served nine days. Jonathan served six days. No further information about Jonathan. According to a 1992 interview with Pearl Root Spotts, granddaughter of George Root, Jonathan was a very handsome man and looked like Tom Selleck. This would mean that he was alive at least until the early 1900s since Pearl was born in 1897. December 6 1864 Susanah Root dies at 37 years old. September 17 1865 Martha J. Root dies at 16 years old. 1870 George Root has 258 acres in Horseshoe Run. April 4 1871 George Root marries Emily L. Miller. Tucker County marriage index lists George's parents as Edmund and E. Root. Emily Miller's parents listed as William and Mary Miller. George had been a widower for 6 ½ years. Jonathan was 26 years old. Edmund was 24 years and would marry six weeks later. Laura was the youngest child at 13 years. Martha J. had died 6 years earlier. May 30 1871 David Edmond Root marries Margaret Close, son of David and Agnes Close, six weeks after his father remarries. 1873 David Edmond Root buys 70 acres in Horseshoe Run from William F. Deakins. 1874 David Edmond Root buys 410 acres in Horseshoe Run from William F. Deakins. 1875 David Edmond Root buys 257 acres in Horseshoe Run from William Deakins. 1880 West Virginia census lists George Root (58years), Emily (44 years), and Laura (22 years) as living in Preston County. Census shows George's parents are from Germany and his occupation as a farmer. David Mossey (22 years) from MD listed as being a laborer in household. "History of Tucker County" by Maxwell notes the German ancestry of the Root Family. Per 1992 interview, Pearl Root Spotts, George R. Root was from Wilshire England and he was born there too. West Virginia census lists David Edmond Root family as living in Tucker County. Census place was St. George. Neighbors were James and Emma Evans and James and Margaret Close, brother and sister-in-law to David's wife Margaret Close Root. West Virginia census for Ritchie County shows a Caroline Root (single 21 years old) living in the household of Isaiah and Ellen Garner in Clay, WV. She is listed as a sister-in-law, so Ellen would be her sister. Age does not coincide with birth date for George Root's daughter Caroline in 1856 nor is there a record of a daughter Ellen Root. 1881 Laura Root marries George H. Gauer. 1900 Maryland census shows George Root living in Garrett County with daughter Laura and son-in-law George Gauer. George Root's parents listed as being from WV. Again, another inconsistency in the origin of Edmund and E. Root. Are they from England, Germany, Massachusetts, or West Virginia. Emily Root is not living in this household. She is living with stepson David Edmond and Margaret Root in Thomas, WV. Why the split between husband and wife? 1902 David Edmond Roots buys 94 acres in Horseshoe Run from William F. Deakins. September 6 1909 George R. Root dies. Buried next to first wife Susanah Root and daughter Martha J. in Texas Cemetery, Horseshoe Run, WV. July 8 1914 Laura Root Gauer dies at 56 years. Buried at Red House Cemetery. 1920 West Virginia census shows David Edmond (72 years) and Margaret Close Root (65 years) living in Tucker County (probably Thomas). David Edmond's occupation is listed as a shoe maker. His father is listed as being born in MD (this would mean George Root). His mother is listed as being born in WV (this would be Susanah Root from Aurora). Also in household, stepmother Emily (86) son Julius (25 years and a lumberman by trade), grandson Lakin (8 years), grandson William (age looks like 4 months). 1920 West Virginia census shows William Root (89 years and a lumberman) as a boarder with John and Georgianne Knotts in Tucker County (probably Thomas). Also listed as boarders are his son Elwood (12 years) and Wade (11 years). 1920 West Virginia census shows Hellen A. Root (11 years) , daughter of George Edward Root, living with her grandparents George and Berender J. White. February 1922 Emily Root dies in home of stepson David Edmond Root in Thomas. August 20 1934 David Edmond Root dies. Buried at Texas Church Cemetery next to his stepmother, Emily Root. How far south from the lake? I still cannot help but ask if you might not mean Wharton Furnace which is about eight miles northeast of Patterson Run in Wharton Twp., Fayette Co. It does have a sign and it is visible from the road on which it sits. Regards, Jane

Greetings veterans and newbies of the rootsweb. I would like tell you there are some really great folks who are willing to help just for the asking. I, myself do Volunteer research at Andersonville Civil War Prison in Andersonville Georgia. There are Any research I do is absolutely at NO cost and I am willing to do what I can. There are 417 prisoners on record from your state and more than 256 West Virginia or Virginia Union who died here, I thought I would send my offer. As Virginia was one of the states that was torn apart and was truley brother against brother,,I feel the need to say I am not in anyway trying to focus on the horrors of Andersonville compared to any POW camp in the north ..( i.e.Elmira ) or any others and do not wish to stir up arguments on this site. My focus is dedicated to ALL of those held prisoner during this war , on both sides. I just happen to be near Andersonville so this is where I do my work. Here are my sources of research. There are 2 online databases to do lookups.....One by name...one by Company and Regiment. I also have a copy of the Dorence Atwater Death list which has the names and grave numbers of 12960 graves with only 460 marked as " UNKNOWN " This along with a CD I have which contains 34,000 names of the 45,000 who were imprisoned there which helps me find prisoner records because of misspellings of the names or alternate names. I visit the prison site every couple of weeks and have access to the onsite databases as well as the physical files. I would like to let you know of another service I offer which is to take photos of graves for a small fee. Please do not consider this spam as my research offer is FREE for the asking and will be posted on this county site only once. If there is anything I can do in helping your research at Andersonville, please just ask. Please visit my website dedicated to those Americans who were imprisoned and died in captivity while in the service to our country Kevn Frye Local Andersonville Historian / National Park Service Volunteer http://www.angelfire.com/ga2/Andersonvilleprison/index.html AOL USERS go to http://hometown.aol.com/andersonvillecw/

Michael brought property from Abraham Ringer and even though Michael is buried in the Ringer cemetary his children and Abraham are all buried at St Paul. A Article in the Casselman Chronicles by one of Michael's grandchildren stated that he told her parents that his father came from Rotterdam. If this is true than the other Ringer families would be eliminated because they have been in Pa for a couple of generations. Joseph is suppose to have been born in Germany. He was the father of Sarah Reed who >married James Carroll. Jan, Do you have the short piece about an early settler named Wm. Reed in Oren F. Morton's "A History of Preston County, West Virginia?" Is that the one you mean? On p. 385, Morton writes that William came from "the Valley of Virginia" to Monongalia. James, a son, purchased 900 acres immediately west of Reedsville, which was named for him. He mentions that James had a brother named John who had a son named Quinter who was on the county court. Apparently John also had a son named John H., but that part is unclearly worded. John H. settled in Hacklebarney in 1839. Also unclear is whether or not a Henry H. was a son of James. Of Henry H. Morton writes, "Has been interested in several inventions, an has a proclivity for writing verse, some of which finds expression in print." On p. 460, Morton indicates that James Reed was b. 1797 d. 1880 and married Elizabeth Guseman. In Janice Sisler's "Volume 1, In Remembrance" book of Preston cem's lists, there's one for Reedsville and in it is a James who d. 1/13/1880 age 82-2-2. Elizabeth Reed d. 5/13/1870 but Janice reports that her age was illegible. There are other Reeds listed. I believe that Janice is on this list and still has copies of this volume available. It was printed by McClain. Regards, Jane
