Lee, Try _http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_select.aspx_ (http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_select.aspx) , there are Preston County death certificates online that you can print out. cindy In a message dated 10/4/2005 1:51:48 PM Eastern Daylight Time, [email protected] writes: I am thinking about making a trip sometime this month (Oct. 2005) to Preston Co.--which is about three hours away from where I live in MD. Where might these resources be located and what costs are necessary to copy them? Thanks, Lee Michael
Lee----I have done some research in Kingwood where I grew up so perhaps I can give you some information that will be helpful. The County Clerk's office is where you go to look for births, deaths and marriages, not in that order. If I remember correctly the fee for a certificate was either $3 or $5. The wills are there also but I'm not sure about deeds. The Preston County Journal office, almost across the street from the Court House, has microfilms of their newspapers. You may borrow them to take to the Library to use the reader (library is just in the next block so it is in comfortable walking distance. They ask that you leave your driver's license as security when you borrow the microfilms. It seems to me that I paid a small fee to make copies of certain articles in the Journal but it wasn't more than 10 cents. Very reasonable and fun skimming through the old papers. I found several missing ancestors that way. Enjoy your visit to Kingwood---it should be getting pretty up there with the leaves starting to change. Eleanor G.
Thanks for your responses, Roy. Is there a specific office for genealogical records in the Kingwood courthouse? Is there a specific office/person I should contact before I visit? I know some places require appointments for research, while others allow walk-ins. Lee Michael
Lee, The Preston Co courthouse and records burned in 1869. My book on the duplicate Preston Co vital records that were sent to Richmond before the fire should be available at the courthouse or Kingwood Library which is in walking distance of the courthouse. It covers births & deaths 1853-1959 and marriages 1853-1860 (1859 missing). The courthouse birth and death books begin in 1868 and the marriage books begin in 1869. These are typed records. I do not know the current charge for certified copies. Preston Co death certificates 1916-1954 are online at http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_select.aspx and can be downloaded free of charge. The numbering sequence for wills and deeds continued after the fire. The first will book includes Wills and Settlements No. 2 1869-1886 and Wills No. 3 1869-1881. Some wills were re-recorded after the fire. The first deed book after the fire is Deed Book 25. This book is all re-recorded deeds. There are grantor and grantee indexes for the deeds. I don't recall the cost per page for copies but believe it to be in the neighborhood of $1-$1.50. The Preston County Journal from 1866 and other Preston Co newspapers are on microfilm at West Virginia University, Wise Library, Morgantown WV. The hours are 10-5 Mon-Sat. Microfilm prints are 10 cents each. WVU has a nice collection and the stacks are open. Xerox copies are 10 cents each on the self-service copier. The Kingwood Library has a small genealogy collection. The Terra Alta Library also has a small genealogy collection. History House at Terra Alta also a small genealogy collection. History House is open on Sunday afternoons May-September and at other times by appointment. He had a sister called Winnie but they did not emigrate at the same time. I am not sure where they lived or if they even lived in the same State.
Dianne, Elizabeth Arnold Ogg was also, known as Betsy.
Dianne, Elder Samuel lived on land, in the Mill Creek Drainage, near what is Rt. 50. Elder Arnold, actually belonged to the Beaver Run Congregation, in Hampshire Co. VA (WV) He traveled many miles to establish Brethren Congregations. His daughter Elizabeth Arnold married an Ogg,and attended the Bear Creek Congregation. It is known that Samuel preached there. There is some evidence he preached at a tavern at Sunnyside, MD. and why not as this was the area that was part of the German Settlement. It is known he preached in the Reno District, in Preston, Co. His daughter Magdalene married Peter Fike, and they lived not far from Eglon. Churches then were not what we think of today. Small groups in one vicinity might meet in a school, a home, or a barn. The Mother Church, or congregation might be some miles away. Remember, we are talking about horse and wagon, or horse and buggy days. When I was 3 years old in 1931, I remember a Brethren funeral our family attended in the home, and the casket was taken for burial on a wagon pulled by horses.

About the year 1785, he with others of the family, Zachariah, Dan, Catherine, and Charity, moved ot what is now known as Beaver Run, then called Manorland, near Burlington, West Virginia. There Samuel married Mary Ludwig and to them were born two sons and ten daughters, of whom Magdalena Arnold Fike was one. He is said to have owned the first top buggy in the vicinity and people came for miles to see it. On March 29, 1831, he had a span of colts hitched to the buggy, and they became frightened and, running away, killed him. He was a minister of great activity, traveling afar to preach, and was the first minister of the Church of the Brethren to preach in the environs of the Eglon congregation. He was known as the preacher with a beard. In the cemetery on the ridge east of Beaver Run Valley, Bro. Arnold was buried. The first sandstone marker has been replaced by one of more modern design, but it is still used as a marker at the entrance to show the grave of a great pioneer of the church in West Virginia. This may be said of his children: John died young; Jacob married Sarah Wine and later Sarah Ogg; Magdalene married Peter Fike; Nancy married Jacob Garber; Hannah married Jacob Biser; Susan married Nicholas Biser; Betsy married John Ogg; Christina married Dan Livengood; and Rebecca married John Leatherman; Lydia married George High; Mollie married John Fleming; Catherine married John Long. Almost all of the Arnold relationship were members of the Church. Source: "A History of the Church of the Brethren in the First District of West Virginia", by Foster Melvin Bittinger, Brethren Pub. It has been a while since I have worked on these. I did get a Deed that I wanted to share with you. I believe that John W. Anyway, I find his link to his mother Ann Pugh who passed when she had all her children but it does not specify her age or date. If you are interested please email me back. Thanks Jay Brethen

Miller and Galen B. Royer, pub. 1912. I think the book is out of print. The wives got very little publicity and were thought of as "help-mates". It would be uncommon to see more than a maiden name, her parents names, and the names of their children. Charles Edward Arnold 1866-1902 IS listed. He was the son fo Bishop Daniel B.and Mary Elizabeth Ludwick Arnold. Elder Samuel Arnold is also NOT in the biographies in "Two Centuries of the Church of the Brethren in Western Pennsylvania 1751-1950,pub. by the Historical Comm. There is a Thomas FREY listed in the 1870 census with wife, Mary, in Grant Township. He was born 1801 in MD/PA/or VA and she was born in 1812 in Virginia. I think they are probably buried in Preston County. Does anyone have access to cemetery records who can look for me? Thank you. Rebecca
