    3. Researching the following Preston County families, mostly in southern Preston County: I. Daniel MYERS (1817 - 1886) and his wife, Eve (WILIE or WILES, probably from the German WEYL family) (1817 - 1905), Rowlesburg area of Preston County, WV. Daniel was a German Baptist Brethren minister. Both buried in Watkins Cemetery near Rowlesburg. When Eve died in 1905 her obituary (The Vindicator, an Old German Baptist Brethren publication) mentioned that they had 15 children, 64 grandchildren and 113 gg grandchildren, yet I've discovered only one other researcher (my 1st cousin) who is studying this family. Especially interested in documenting the Myers ancestry of Daniel. Note that this Rev. Daniel MYERS is NOT the Rev. Daniel Myers of northern Preston County, WV. II. Also Samuel JACKSON, who went west to California from Preston County, in the Gold Rush days, and never heard of again. Interested in any information about his ancestry. He married Elizabeth BARNS; also interested in any information on her ancestry. They were the parents of Julia A JACKSON, who married Henry MYERS, son of the above-mentioned Daniel and Eve MYERS. Henry and Julia MYERS (my g. grandparents) eventually migrated to Woods (later Major) County, in Oklahoma Territory. Jim Freed, Delaware, Ohio [email protected]

    1. Daugherty/Elliott etc
    2. Alice
    3. This information originally came from Jane McMann Walsh On. p. 77 in that book I cited in my prior email, i.e., Earl Core's second volume in his series on Monongalia County, there is mention of the Leading Creek Settlement where in 1781 Indians killed Alexander RONEY, Mrs. DOUGHERTY, Mrs. HORNBECK and her children, and Mrs. BUFFINGTON and her children, taking prisoner Mrs. RONEY and her son and Daniel DOUGHERTY. I am not familiar with the location of the Leading Creek Settlement. Was this later in Preston Co. or nearby? I'm wondering if this Daniel was the husband or son of this "Mrs. Dougherty." Does anyone on this list know? I have noted in Morton's "A History of Preston County, West Virginia, Volume I" that the area called Dority was where the DOUGHERTYs eventually lived. On p. 341, Morton writes: "John DOUGHERTY, whose daughter wedded the pioneer ELLIOTT, was on the Cheat in 1774, and two years later was living on ELliott Ridge which overlooks Albright. Until recently the surname lingered in Preston. It gave designation to Dority Run and Dority postoffice." Unfortunately, Morton omits any genealogical data for the DOUGHERTY or the RIGHTMIRE families in that Chapter (VII) of his book! Under ELLIOTT, Morton does write that Abraham b. 1773 d. 1845 m. first Jane DOUGHERTY. Apparently Jane had ten children before she died but no dates are noted. She may have died circa 1814. Her children are listed as: William m. Susan JEFFERS Mary E. m. Jacob CRANE Elizabeth m. Samuel JEFFERS Rebecca single John b. 1801 m. Elizabeth MEREDITH Jane b. 1806 d. 1886 m. Calvin CRANE Sarah m. (1) John S. Graham, (2) Jacob CRANE Drusilla m. Robert FORMAN Susan m. Abraham JEFFERS Rachel m. Henry CRESS In Morton's Appendix E, he lists original land patents covering Preston County and on this list is John DOUGHERTY with 205 acres on the Cheat adjoining claim of William BIGGS (settlement, 1776) and 400 acres on Cheat and Dunkard Bottom (settlement 1774). In Samuel Wiley's "History of Preston County," on p. 406 in the section on the Portland District, there somewhat contradictory information as he writes the following: "William DOUGHERTY, father of Jarvis, lived near what is now St. Joe, and owned a large amount of land. In 1794, William [sic] Elliott married Jane DOUGHERTY, William's daughter. Abraham ELLIOT got land of Wm. Dougherty, his father-in-law, and settled where Elliott Crane now lives. Abraham had 11 children. [The eleventh was Margery, dau. of his second wife, the former Mrs. Rebecca Dewitt.]" So, was the original DOUGHERTY in Preston a John who had a son named William which confused Samuel Wiley? And, was Daniel, taken prisoner by the Indians in 1781, another son of John? Were Elizabeth and Susan daughters of John DOUGHERTY and his second wife?

I believe Jacob Funk is one of the first settlers of the Kingwood area: "Kingwood, the county seat, was originally settled by Conrad Sheets, Jacob Funk and a man named Steele in 1807. They named it Kingwood after a large grove of large and stately trees that grew in the area, known as "King-wood." The Virginia General Assembly established the town by legislative enactment on January 23, 1811, with John Roberts, Jacob Funk, William Price, James Brown and Hugh Morgan serving as trustees." 1. Christopher Cupp
    2. Most of the information I have been able to find on Christopher Cupp comes from the census and a website called dmgweb.net/genealogy, which has a lot of well- documented info on the Cupp family. Christopher, son of Peter Leonard Cupp,Sr. and Susanna was born around 1780 in Monongalia Co, now Preston Co. He married Ann M., but I don't know when . 1810 census Monongalia Co.,VA "Chrest" Cupp has two females less than 10 , three sons less than 10, one female 26-45 ,and he is 26-45. 1820 census Bowling Green, Licking Ohio Christopher Cupp has two males under 10, two 10-16 and he is 26-45, one female under 10 { this may be my great great grandmother, Margaret} and one female 26-45. Since my Margaret claims to have been born in VA in 1814, they may have only been in Ohio for 5 years or less. 1830 census, I can't find him in any state! 1840 census Laurel, Hocking, Ohio Christopher Cupp one male 10-15, one 15-20, and he is 40-50. Females one 50-60. They live next to Conrad Cupp, possibly some relation. 1850 census Fairfield,Ohio Christopher Cup is a 70 year old chairmaker, born in VA Ann M. Cup age 68 born in VA They live with Lewis Cup, a 23 year old farmer and his family. Christopher Cupp dies in Fairfield,Ohio in 1854. There are no death records in Ohio before 1867, and I haven't found any record of a will for him. I have not been able to find the names of any of his daughters. My Margaret would have married 1830-1833, and I have not been able to find any record of her marriage, either. Any help filling in my gaps would be greatly appreciated. Karen Lee
