    3. History of Preston County West Virginia by Oren F. Morton, 1914 page 430 FOGLESONG Peter - m. (1) Mary Lantz, (2) Mary Fries, (3) Mary Wile, (4) Rachel Fraley page 446 LANTZ Henry - m. Eve Bishoff - c: 5. Mary - b. 1811, d. 1835 - m. Peter Foglesong Peter's obituary in the West Virginia Argus, Kingwood, W. Va., Thursday, August 8, 1895 issue, page 3 column 5 states he was born near the village of Peterstown, Carroll county, Md, that he married in 1830, and the following year, with the family of his father-in-law, the late David H. Fries, emigrated to the German Settlement, in Preston county, W. Va. Peter first appears in the 1832 Preston Co personal property tax list indicating settlement the previous year. Morton states on page 351 that David H. Fries came from Union Bridge, Md., in 1830, and settled midway between Carmel and Amboy and on page 368 that Henry Lantz came from Lancaster county, Pa., in 1801. As the Lantz family was in Preston Co long before Peter Foglesong arrived on the scene, it appears that Morton has the order of Peter's first two wives reversed. Further, he couldn't have married Mary Fries in 1830 if Mary Lantz didn't die until 1835. Morton incorrectly determined that the Mary Foglesong buried in Aurora Cemetery who died Apr. 17, 1835 in the 24th year of her age was Peter's wife Mary Lantz when the evidence indicates she was his wife Mary Fries instead. The Aurora Documents, page 68, reports the birth of Sharlotte Ann Catharine, daughter of Peter Fogelson & wife Mary, on Oct 19, 1843. Does anyone know which Mary (Mary Fries or Mary Wile) was her mother or have any further information on Sharlotte? Thanks. Roy Lockhart

His father Bert Whitehair, who moved to Elkview from Doddrige/Ritchie County in early 1900's. Bert was the son of Adolphus Whitehair & Catherine Leggett, of Doddrige Cty, & the brother of Guy Whitehair, who married Ellie. Adolphus was the son of John P. Whitehair & Elizabeth (McGruder?) of Preston Cty. It is at this point I am a little lost. I am not sure if there is another generation between John P & John August Whitehair (possibly a George), or if John P & George are one & the same. Maybe you can shed some light on this for me. Also, I am interested in your line of decent from John August Christian & Eva Troy. Hope to hear back from you. Feel free to email me.

    2. Greetings, Does anyone have the parents of Sylvania Gooding/Goodwin b. about 1833 in VA, who was the second wife of John Gooding/Goodwin b. 1804? After John Gooding/Goodwin died about 1880, Sylvania ended up in SouthUnion, Fayette Co., PA, she appears to have married James Vance as she is also in the Wharton Twp., 1880 census. I don't know what happen to her afterwards. I would like to know more about Sylvania. If anyone is interested in this family I have more. I have her parents as a Balsinger, but cannot find proof. Regards Delores

    3. Deloris, The old cemetery sounds like the one I visited about three years ago. There were no stones visible but under several years accumulation of leaves we did find two stones in good condition. Both were for Gooding and I believe were a Mother and child. I have photos somewhere. Will see if I can locate them. Greetings from CA: I've been researching the John G. Goodwin's of Preston County, WV for a few years and just connected Amanda M. Married second about 1855 to Sylvania Balsinger. They are in the 1860 and 1870 Bruceton Mills, Preston County, WV census. Maudy M. is age 5 in 1860 and then in 1870 as Amanda age 16. After John Gooding/Goodwin died his son John G. Goodwin b. 1830, d. 1910 lived on the farm near Rockville. I heard from a cousin that there was a family cemetery on the farm, but it was plowed under. I think that Sylvania might have relocated in Uniontown, Fayette Co., PA after John's death and might have married a Vance. There is a Amanda M. 3. Hi Alice, I really don't know anything about Phoebe. She and her children are related to me through Phillip Huffman. My Huffmans moved around from WV, PA to the eastern shore of MD. Phillip's son, Francis Marion, is my gggrandfather. He married twice and lived in Marquess until his death. My gr grandfather is his oldest son, John Martin Huffman. He married Martha Burgoyne. Her family is another of my roadblocks. They moved around a lot but my grandfather, Russell Reed Hoffman (note the change in spelling.) was born in Marquess. John Martin and family ended up in Snow Hill, MD. We don't know why but he was severely injured in a fall at at steel mill and never walked right again. Very disabled. His children spread out far and wide. Russell married a MD girl and they lived in Wilmington, DE until WWII when the family moved to California. That is where my father, Russell Reed Hoffman, Jr. returned after the conclusion of WWII and married my mother and they lived in Compton and Downey, CA. 3. Hi, I need to clear up my connection. My ancestor, Phillip Huffman, married Phoebe Goff (1854)(his second wife). She was the daugher of Malinda Garner and Salathial Goff, hence my information is sketchy. I am most interested in the descendents of Phoebe and Phillip, Harrison Dortman Huffman and Phoebe Luella Huffman. These two married a sister and brother, Susan and William Hillard. I am trying to make contact with someone descended from each of Phillip's twelve children (ten from his first wife, Aletha Summers). I do believe that Phoebe Luella had no children. I just keep hoping that the more contacts I make, the more likely I am to reach my goal and I meet so many people that connect back to the whole WV "larger" family. My Mary/Elizabeth may well have been from Louden Co., Va., because her first husband (Garner) was b. there. That is my brick wall for now. I think I have read letters from you which indicate you are from the Rightmire/Daugherty connection. Will look thru my notes further. Welcome aboard!
