One of my ggrandfathers was John Fredrick Nordeck. I don't believe this is the same "John Nordeck" however a little information about him: b. 7/24/1880 in Preston county, son of Christopher H and Mary (Moore) Nordeck. Married 6/16/1902 to Miss Dora Fitzgerald in Upshur county. Died at age 57 on 12/18/1937, suddenly of a heart attack. Had Three sons Paul H. Nordeck of Charleston, James M. Nordeck (my grandfather) of Weston; and Mark Nordeck. Two Grandchildren James Robert (my dad) and Mary Jane Nordeck (my aunt). William Edgar Nordeck worked for over 35 years with the B&O Railroad and upon his death the Railroad paid Tribute of the highest order when fellow trainmen donated their services and a Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Company train that he was conductor of to bring his body back to Weston some 200 mile round trip. I have the newspaper clipping, funeral service attendance and information, along with a number of photos of him along with where he is lay to rest. Over the years I have been working very hard on the Nordeck family records and tree as there was some conflict a while back in our family on who was or wasn't a family member. I do have a good deal of information on the Fitzgerald side as well and several other direct descendents. Hope that helps a little and you are welcome to email me if I can be of service to you

This is some excellent information that I thought should be passed on. I got it as a message from another list but it something that I wondered about when I was unable to find a child born in a census year. Dianne Congress specifies a "census day" and the time allowed to take the census. The census taker was to count the people who lived in each house as of the "census day." which may include anyone who died, or exclude any child born after, the "census day." Close analysis is imperative here. (i.e. the census days for 1820 and 1830 are not exactly 10 years apart. There is a 2 month difference. So, if a person was born between June 1, 1820 and August 7, 1820 the child would appear in 1820 as "under 5" and in 1830 as "under 10" rather than "of 10 and under 16," because he would not yet be 10. CENSUS YEAR CENSUS DAY TIME ALLOWED 1790 2 Aug 1790 9 Months 1800 4 Aug 1800 9 Months 1810 6 Aug 1810 10 Months 1820 7 Aug 1820 13 Months 1830 1 June 1830 12 Months 1840 1 June 1840 18 Months 1850 1 June 1850 5 Months 1860 1 June 1860 5 Months 1870 1 June 1870 5 Months 1880 1 June 1880 1 Month 1890 1 June 1890 1 Month 1900 1 June 1900 1 Month 1910 15 Apr 1910 1 Month 1920 1 Jan 1920 1 Month --------------------------------- How low will we go? I don't know if this would be of any help but in my high school class in Kingwood, 1946, I had a Mildred Braham, a Barkley Braham and a James Freeland. Mildred and Barkley were brother and sister. Eleanor Greentree
Gosh Bev, the name turned out to be Brahm and not Braham. I remember when we looked for Braham, thinking that was your line. Other researchers (plus me) can learn from this ---- watch the spelling or at least check all various spellings. I am happy for you and your mother. Pat (Friend) Thompson -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] On Behalf Of [email protected] And Norma, I had a huge breakthrough on my ancestors from Preston County. I thought I had a Braham ancestor but it turned out to be Leonard Brahm (not Braham which is a name I know from Preston County), and I traced him from Huntingdon County PA and of all things, he was in the Civil War in two units, last at Cold Harbor, severely injured and went from eastern panhandle to Preston to Parkersburg before settling in Fairmont, just 20 minutes from my mother who had no clue he was there in historic Woodlawn Cemetery;s mausoleum. She didn't even know his name! His daughter, my mother's grandmother had died very young from cancer and no clues remained until I worked on this. We are so happy! Thanks again. Beverly

Muddy Creek crosses under WV Rt. 26 somewhere north of Albright and flows about 2.5 miles (past the old Iron Furnace) into Cheat River. Kayakers run it in the spring. I don't have a map that shows where it's origin is, or how many miles lie east/northeast of 26. Three pictures of the part of it are online at _http://www.americanwhitewater.org/rivers/id/2413_ (http://www.americanwhitewater.org/rivers/id/2413) Hope that helps. Gary

Barb To the best of my knowledge, there is no Randolph in Preston County, so I suppose this is Randolph County. Your Margaret Hartzell (maybe one of my relatives) is very elusive. According to where she lived and family members, it is logical that should have been buried in the old cemetery at Mt. Moriah, Valley Point. The site has been reused. One body is known to have been removed to the new (current) Mt. Moriah Cem. As far as I can learn, there were no markers with names in the old plot. Or it could have been the Falkenstine cemetery with no marker and this site has also been trashed. I do have some names and dates so if you have a Shank in your tree, no matter how vague, please contact me directly at [email protected] Thank you, Cynthia Walters Shank I am looking for information from the Shank Family as well, my grandmother on my father's side was a Shank, Phoebe to be exact.
