Hi list My mother-in-law is still living and NEVER throws ANYTHING away. I do know she took her moms, Ruth Fortney Wiles, d/o Vernor Peter Pell and Minnie Olive Wolfe Fortney, photo album when Ruth passed on. I will see if there are any photos of the Fortney's that she knows of in the album. If so, I can scan and send them to all of you. Give me a few weeks to get back to Kingwood. Bev
WOW!!!!!!!!!! Isn't this just amazing. I have been researching my husbands line and his grandmother was Ruth Fortney, daughter of Vernor Peter Pell Fortney and Minnie Olive Wolfe. I have his name as Vernor and not Vernon. Which is correct??? His g g grandparents were Barton and Emily Squires and g g g was Daniel and Leah Menear. My husband also has Shahan and Shannon, and Wiles in his main lines. All are from the Tunnelton #4 area and Rowlesburg. I am a new subscriber to this list and I am thrilled to get this information. Bev
Lisa...I have Kimmell but not in Preston County and though I have some info I have not researched the name....My Great Grandfather married Margaret Ellen Kimmell...dau of Amos and Nancy "Hummel" Kimmel in Bureau County Illinois...I do not have the exact date handy but it was late 1860's....My great Grandfather was William Rightmire...the Grandson of James Rightmire who married Elizabeth Daugherty in Monongalia County in 1802. The Preston County West Virginia connection is through this couple and especially Elizabeth Daugherty Rightmire who inherited land on the Cheat River in the early 1800's..... ----- Original Message ----- From: "Lisa Masters" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Tuesday, June 06, 2006 5:17 PM Subject: [WV Preston County] Kimmell's from Preston County > Any Kimmell related family researchers here? > > > Lisa Masters > > > ==== WVPRESTO Mailing List ==== > To unsubscribe, send the command "unsubscribe" to > [email protected] (if in mail mode) or > [email protected] (if in digest mode.) > > ============================== > Jumpstart your genealogy with OneWorldTree. Bev, I'll toss out the same question to you as I did with Clarke. Do you know of any photographs of Barton Fortney or Emily Squires? To answer your question, my records show your husband's greatgrandfather as Vernor Peter Pell Fortney. By the way, there is an international Fortineux Family Reunion in Canada in August. The Fortneys of Preston Co., WV are descended from Jonas Fortineux. I will send you an invitation to the Jonas Fortineux website. I've attached on of two photos I have of Mary Samantha. In the other one she is in her upper years with her daughter. I have no photos older then the one I've attached of any Fortney. I have more photos of the next geneation and younger of Fortneys, ans Shahans plus some Sigley, Trickett, etc. I can't get excited about DNA testing. There is positive documentation that Draper & Vernon were fathered by a Pell, and a test won't prove it was Albert. The letter is probably about a close as I'm going to get for documentation on an out-of-wedlock situation. I checked, and Karen has the original letter and was the one who had the 8x10 photos taken. She won't let it out of her hands, but just sent me a 600dpi JPEG scan of the original and I'm working on it in Photoshop now. My wife is working on a transcription. I apoligize for the large size of the picture attached, but for genealogy, I would want a photo with enough pixels to have printed. Clarke

First, in the 1870 census, the Pell family was in Rowlesburg, Preston Co., WV, probably neighbors of my g.g grandparents, the Daniel and Eva Myers family. Secondly, and more important, is that this is a case "just begging" for DNA studies to be used to support the suggestion that the father of Draper and Vernon Fortney was Albert W. Pell. For this DNA test, you'll need a male line descendant of Mary Fortner (with the surname of Fortner) and a Pell-named male who descends from either Albert W. Pell, or one of his three brothers that I see on the 1870 census, George, Francis or Thomas (not sure if "Thomas" is the correct interpretation of the rather difficult-to-read census image). I am an administrator of two surname DNA studies (Freed and McCabe) and if you want more information on this type of study, please contact me off-list at [email protected] Jim Freed, Delaware, Ohio.

Her mother was Freda Paticia Fortney (Wife of Donald Reed Shahan), daughter of Draper Fortney. I believe her sister, Karen Shahan, has the original letter. I have been searching for info on the unknown Pell for about a year and had resigned myself that this question was going to be impossible to solve. Several weeks ago my wife handed me a large envelope and asked if I had scanned these. I opened the envelope and there were two 8x10 B/W photos of the letter. I was soon overjoyed and mad at the same time. Neither my wife or her sister had mentioned the photos to me...I don't think they realized their significance. I'm still trying to get the original from my wife's sister to see if I can improved the scan, and if not, a least do a good transcription. Realizing that this might be the only "smoking gun" document for a possible father of Draper & Vernon. I just had to post it for others ASAP. Clarke

Perhaps 25 years ago or more, my parents and I visited a grandson of Mary Samantha Fortney. He related a story about Mary and her pregnancy and we also discussed the Pell connection. In addition, I corresponded with and visited Elsie (Fortney) Phillips, daughter of Draper Fortney. I still have her letters, but will have to search for them. In my opinion, you have presented a convincing argument. I'm intrigued that you have this letter some 130 years later. How are you related to Mary Samantha Fortney? As you have this artifact, do you have any old photos? I have searched for many years for a photograph of Barton Fortney, who lived until 1896, but without luck. I am going to send you an invitation to a website for descendants of Jonas Fortineux. Thanks, Phil Goff

I have a copy (My sister-in-law has the original) of a love letter dated 12 Apr 1874 from A.W. Pell to Molly (Mary Samantha) Fortney. IMHO, I believe that A.W. Pell is Albert W. Pell. Albert was a career soldier in the U.S. Army. He was living with his parents in Preston County in the 1870 census. In the 1880 census he was a soldier in Montana and in 1900 he was a soldier in the Philippine Islands. In 1910 or 20 he is a retired soldier in San Diego, CA. On the 1930 census he is in some sort of institution (appears to be hospital) in Washington, D.C.

I do not know her source. A History of Preston County Part I, by Oren F. Morton, 1914, page 426 names the wife of Jeremiah Elliason as Ann Killen. This family came to Preston Co from Delaware and they are the only Eliasons in the 1840 and 1850 censuses of Preston Co having a family. Jeremiah Eliason (c1800-1857) and his wife Nancy A (c1806-1850) are buried in the Blackwood Cemetery. (Nancy is a nickname for Ann.) Although there is not a female in Sarah Jane's age group in Jeremiah's household in 1840, she may have been living with another family at that time or her age group may have been incorrectly marked as 5-10. As with other death records of that period, Sarah Jane's does not give the names of her parents. In the absence or incompleteness of official records, sometimes circumstantial evidence is all that is available. Hope this helps, Roy Lockhart
