In the Indiana Weekly Messenger of Sept. 7, 1898 Amos along with 39 other veterans went to the national encampment of the GAR in Cinncinnati. In the Indiana Progress of May 12 1887 he is on the committee for Memorial Services on Memorial Day. He also went to the encampment at Scranton PA in 1886. Dec 3, 1902, The Indiana Gazette, "George Rowe, Esq., of Lorain, O. is visiting his brother, Amos Row." The Indiana Democrat, Oct. 18, 1883 "Amos Row, of Clearfield, Pa, who has not been in town for the last fourteen years, accompanied by his sister, Mrs. Woods, of Reading, Pa. who is on her way to Western Virginia. They are guests of George Row, Esq." Amos is also in the 1890 Veteran's Schedulle, Co A 149th Inf. in Indiana Pa. He had a gunshot wound to his right thigh. The Amos Row in Clearfield is probably not Amos Sr. as in the 1910 census in Clearfield there is an Amos C. Row, age 58. But he is probably a relative. Hope this helps.

Patti - When you get to Newburg, get off Rt. 92 on the right at the bridge that overpasses the town. Go into town, under the bridge and follow the road to the right, up the hill to the marker for Damon. It's 64/12 on the map but I don't remember how well marked it is. You can also ask in the town. It's large enough that most people will know where it is. Good luck with your research. I am glad to see there was a Kingwood Chronicle that far back. I have spent most of 2 days with the microfilms of the Preston County Journal 1901 to 1908 issues that tended to include a lot of coal mine union news for Tunnelton - mentioning my great grandfather James O. Tuhill quite a few times. Have you ever seen copies/microfilms of the Kingwood Chronicle from 1861-2? Anyone else on the list know of more papers to use researching early Preston County? This newspaper was discontinued due to rumors that the press would be destroyed and the Row brothers hanged. There is a biographical sketch on George Row in the Biographical and Historical Cyclopedia of Indiana and Armstrong Counties, Pennsylvania, by John M. Gresham & Co., 1891, pages 141-143 (Indiana Co) which also mentions his brother Amos and contains information regarding the Kingwood Chronicle. Roy Lockhart

Hey Janice thanks for the info. I guess this just proves that you can't believe what is written in books. I have read 3-4 different books about the Deahl family and each of them has a different history. Maybe you can look at this info and see if you can straighten it out. I would really appreciate it. The first book I read said Henry was born in 1791 in Pa and died in 1868 and is buried in Kasson, Barbour Co WV. Another says that about in 1830 he came from Somerset Pa to the Zalmon cuppett farm northeast of Hazelton. Still another says he came from Cambria Co in 1820 and cleared out the farm owned by Isaac Layton. (This one would match what you said about the Layton Cem.) Anther book says that Henry came from Yorktown and in 1812 moved to the Chestnut Ave area on the ridge above Hazelton WV. (This author has a man by the name of Sell accompanying him and a sister Anna, who later married George Herring. This again matches what you have on your Sell line) One author goes on to say; " In addition to the eleven named children of Henry and Elizabeth two other children were born who did not live to maturity. These two children were buried with Elizabeth in the Layton Cemetery. (teets, History of the Deahl family. p. 3) Even another author says: " He (Henry) married, first, Elizabeth Sell, daughter of john Sell and Susanna Helman, 1812. Marriage (2): 1809.( NO NAME MENTIONED) Born, 24 No 1795, in Friedens, Somerset Co., Pa (Friedens Church Records. p.2.0> Died. before 1842. Burial in Hazelton, Preson Co., WV (Layton Cemetery). Janice, where do you think Henry died and is buried? These books say he died in Kasson, Cove Dist. Barbour Co. and after his death, Elizabeth moved back to the Deahl Homestead in Hazelton where she died and is buried in Layton. AYI YI YI YI YI YI I am SOOOOOOO confused. Authors are Morton, Wiley, Deahl, and Teets. I would like to check my Sell line with you. Anna, b 9 Sep 1798 Somerset Co Pa Elizabeth b 24 Nov 1795 Henry b 1722-29 Germantown, PA John Jr. 22 Dec 1794 Somerset PA Magdelena 26 Feb 1781 and Susanna 1785 Guess this is all in the fun of diggin your roots. I think instead of a shovel in need a backhoe. Keep in touch Bev
Bev: Sorry you had an unproductive trip. I can't imagine why anything would be listed on "Second Street" in Hazelton. However, Elizabeth is said to have died in 1842 and was buried, along with two young children in the "Layton" cemetery. Henry married second to Susan Markley VanSickle and is said to be buried in the "Omberson"/Humberson Cemetery in Maryland. In my TOMBSTONE READINGS OF PRESTON CO., Vol. II, p. 60,I have listed all that we could find at the Cuppett-Faulkner Cemetery in Grant District. It may have been known at one time as Leighton (not Layton) for the man (Isaac) who owned the surrounding property. It is located beside County Rt. 12/3 - Eisentrout Road - which is across Rt. 68 from the Welcome Center just inside the WV line. To get there you would take the road to the left of the mill in Hazelton and follow it almost until it crosses Rt. 68. There is one Leighton marker. Although that is the general area where Henry & Elizabeth lived, there is no marker for Elizabeth or any other Deal/Deahl. Elizabeth was a sister to my ancestor, Anna Sell, who married George Herring. Janice > > I took a road trip yesterday to Preston Co., in particular, to HAZELTON. Also look for LaRue. Laraw or Larue was used as a spelling a family who had a lumber company in Crellin, MD which is close to the West Virginia border. -----Original Message----- From: Pamela Biggins Mike [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Saturday, June 24, 2006 2:14 PM To: [email protected] Subject: RE: [WV Preston County] Re: loraw family of preston co wv and garrett co.md Quite possibly the original name was Larew? >From: [email protected] >Reply-To: [email protected] >To: [email protected] >Subject: [WV Preston County] Re: loraw family of preston co wv and garrett >co.md >Date: 24 Jun 2006 11:27:56 -0600 > >This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > >Classification: Query > >Message Board URL: > >http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/IEC.2ACE/601.613 > >Message Board Post: > >I have a question rather than an answer to your question.
