    1. [WVPENDLE] St. Michael's records
    2. Bill Rexroad
    3. There was a discussion on this list several weeks ago about the old record book from St. Michael's Church. I reported that the book had been translated and transcribed by a George M. Smith (thought to be a university professor) in 1966. The people around Sugar Grove never saw the book again after Smith borrowed it to do this work. Nedra suggested some places the book might have gone. One of those was Bridgewater College at Bridgewater, Virginia. I volunteered to check there since I would soon be in that area. Here is what I found: The library archivist at Bridgewater College is Ruth Greenawalt. She told me they did not have the book and that George M. Smith had never been on the faculty there. She suggested I check with Eastern Mennonite University at Harrisonburg. The library archivist at EMU is Lois Bowman. She said EMU does not have the record book from St. Michael's. However, Ms. Bowman knew George M. Smith from having worked with him on another book several years ago. She said he was a Lutheran minister, not a university professor. He was also a historian and had compiled and published other records like those of St. Michael's. Smith retired and moved to Florida several years ago. He died there about 2001. His papers were donated to Handley Regional Library at Winchester, Virginia. Kate Parker in the archives room at Handley Library in Winchester showed me George M. Smith's hand-written translation and transcription of the St. Michael's record book. But the book itself was not there. She suggested checking at the following locations: Library of Virginia at Richmond Wentz Library, Gettysburg College at Gettysburg, Pennsylvania Roanoke College at Salem, Virginia Over. 3. Bill, Thank you for following up on this. Klaus Wust's publishing company did publish several of George Smith's translations but not this one. It would be a great project. If someone is interested and can get permission from Handley, I can put you in touch with Klaus.
