I believe Nedra answered this question once and I wonder if she or someone else can help me on this. The Day family that lived in Hardy and Pendleton Co. Va. has been a confused one for a long time. I have the 1776 Colonial Census from Frederick Co. Md. showing Leonard Day age 40, his wife Tabitha age 36, and children including Ezekial age 9, Bazel age 5, Samuel age 14, Sarah age 7, Susannah age 11, and Tabitha age 2. I believe this is the Leonard, Ezekial and Bazel that showed up in Hardy/Pendleton co. in the late 1700's Samuel has been up for question. It seems probable that the Samuel who was in Pendleton Co. is this Samuel, however others say he was born 5 yrs. earlier and has a different father. If that is the case what happened to the Samuel in this family? The people that show Samuel moving to Ross Co. Ohio with a different age and father claim Samuel got a Va. land grant (in Pendleton?) for serving in the Rev. War. I believe Nedra on this list said that such land grants did not exist, is this true? Thanks for your help. Becky

Maybe what I had read was that these grants were not given as a result of Revolutionary War service. Do you know how these grants were obtained? Thanks. Becky, You may be correct that the grants were not given as a result of Revolutionary War service. The grants were made by the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia. The original 13 colonies/states gave their own land grants. The Federal government gave grants in the other states. The Virginia Military District is in Ohio and grants for Virginia service were also given in Kentucky. For later wars the locations kept getting farther and farther westward. War of 1812 had grants in Iowa and Illinois, for instance--Acts of 1850 and 1855. The Day family is not mine and I am not sure that I have anything on the early family. Just a smidgeon on one man who married into my Haiglers and his children.
