Thomas Payne and Sidney Jones lived east of Brandywine, on Dry River in Rockingham Co., VA, at its confluence with Skidmore Fork. They both were born and grew up in Orange Co., married there in 1825, and settled in Rockingham by 1830. They are buried at Bank Mennonite Cemetery in Rockingham Co., where descendants have recently marked their graves. Several of their children lived in Pendleton County at one time or another: James F. Payne (1825-before 1920) married Mary Ann Campher in Pendleton Co., his first wife. They are found in Pendleton in 1860 (Franklin), and after that in Rockingham. James served in Co. F, 62nd VA Infantry. Their children were Jacob T. Payne (married Rebecca Flick; resided near Mt. Clinton in Rockingham Co.; seven children), James S. Payne (married Rachel Ann Flick; resided near Mt. Clinton in Rockingham Co.; eight children), William Payne (married Martha L. Flick; residence unknown; one child), Louisa Payne (not found after 1880), Mildred Payne (married George W. Scott; resided near Mt. Clinton in Rockingham Co.; three children), John W. Payne (never married; lived mostly in West Virginia), Mary Jane Payne (married Ammi Eye, who was born in Pendleton Co.; resided near Rawley Springs in Rockingham Co.; four children), Rachel L. Payne (married (1) John Ramey, (2) Jacob Eye; no children; resided in Rockingham Co.), Catherine Payne (not found after 1880). James F. Payne married second Mary Jane Plaugher, neé Terrell, in Rockingham Co. in 1880. Their children were Charles Sidney Payne (married Malinda Joseph, neé Piner; no children; resided near Rawley Springs in Rockingham Co.), Tilden M. Payne (married (1) Rebecca Eye; four children; (2) Willie ____; no children), and Tazewell Payne (married Mary Arey; one child). Jane Frances Payne (17 Feb 1830, died 30 Apr 1916), married James Dyer Ruddle in about 1858, his second wife. They resided near Ruddle in Pendleton Co. Their children were Charles Boggs Ruddle (married Mary Jane Smith; resided in Rockingham Co., VA; six children), Phoebe Jane Ruddle (married Samson "Mack" Conrad; resided in the Mill Run District; four children), Harness Lee Ruddle (married Cora Dove; resided in Germany Valley, Union District; six children), Joseph Ruddle (died young), Margaret "Maggie" Ruddle (married Edward Hartman; resided in the Mill Run District; seven children), Benjamin Franklin Ruddle (died young), and Hannah Sidney Ruddle (married Charles B. Simmons; resided in the Buffalo Hills area; three children). Henry Harrison Payne (1842-after 1930) married Susannah Margaret Heltzel in 1867 in Rockingham Co. They are found in Pendleton in 1880 (Circleville) and 1900 (Union). Henry served in Co. E, 62nd VA Infantry. Their children were Sidney Payne (a girl; died young), Byrd J. Payne (died young?), Elizabeth Payne (married David W. Ball; resided first in Randolph Co., WV, then near Orofino, Idaho; 13 children!), Margaret Payne (married Elmer Ellsworth Snyder; two children), Thomas Payne (died young), Mary Phoebe Payne (married Hugh Porter; resided at Franklin in Pendleton Co.; five children), William Payne (married Annie Florence Huffman; resided near Onego, Pendleton Co., WV; two children), Carrie Susan Payne (married Luther Huffman; resided near Onego, Pendleton Co., WV; seven children), and John Jacob Payne (married Viola Judy; 11 children).
