The discussion below was sent to me privately. I would suggest that anyone whose ancestry traces to the Pendleton County Hulls join the Hull Family Association and obtains these Journals. Our discussion on the Hulls (who are not mine) REINFORCES all the reasons that it is dangerous to accept undocumented Family Group Sheets (Internet or otherwise) and why long ago this list adopted the policy of not posting undocumented info that has not at least been somewhat verified. Regarding Barbara Hull, possibly the wife of Captain Peter Hull, my research has been with the family of Henry Peninger, Senior, born ca. 1731. Henry's will dated 23 May 1796 (PC Will Book 4:42-44) names "fourth daughter Barbara" with no last name. Peter Hull, Junr., witnessed this will. Henry's fifth daughter Anna Elizabeth [Bible] was born ca. 1760-1765 according to census records. The first codicil to the will of Henry Peninger, dated 17 June 1815, was witnessed by Henry Hull. John Peninger, son of Henry, Senior, died without heirs. The County Court Minute Book 1828-1838, p. 94, records a court case to release the claim of his "legal heirs," "Wm. Syphers admr of Michl Harold, Pltff, vs. George Swadley, et al. Listed among these heirs is Barbara Hull, apparently a widow since no husband Hull is included (written by the English clerk as Hull, not Holl). The other daughters' husbands are included if living, as required by Virginia law at that time. Thus, we do know that Barbara Hull was an heir of Henry Peninger, Senior, and most likely his daughter--she is listed in the midst of other childlen. There is nothing in Peninger records stating that this Barbara Peninger married Captain Peter Hull aka Peter Hull, Junior,. This is one of those instances of circumstantial evidence. Is there another Hull wife named Barbara of this approximate age and who shows associations with the Peninger Family? What do we know of the wife of Peter's son Henry? What was her name and approx. age? It would seem that there is some association between the Peter Hull, Junr., and the Henry Hull who served as witnesses, and it has been noted that Peter's eldest son was named Henry. Peter and Barbara Hull are involved in deeds with Nicholas Harper, another son-in-law of Henry Peninger, and Peter and Peninger family members witnessed together other documents. Every Hull-associated document should be examined for associations that would furnish clues to identify the husband of Barbara Peninger Hull. Now for the commercial announcement. Yes, PLEASE use the latest research that is furnished by a RESEARCHING family association (vs. the newsletter that tells you who had a baby.) I cringe every time someone sends un-updated Hinkle and Teter info based upon Morton or even The Hinkle Genealogy, which is almost 40 years old. Unfortunately, since I also work full time I do not always have time to look up the latest info on every Hinkle or Teter who is posted here. I checked some sites a member sent me and none of them offer a proof that his first wife Mary, who may or may not be the mother of all his children, was a Samuels. What we need is a bible record, estate record, marriage license, etc. All these sites say is that they got married in Augusta Co. In 1758 Michael is recorded as a defendent in Frederick Co. Va. His son Adam said he was born in Frederick Co. Va. I was guess the marriage did not take place in Augusta. I have never found a marriage license for Michael and Mary or for Michael and Elizabeth, his second wife. Does any Arbogast researcher have any proofs for these ladies and their last names? Also, in 1749 a Michael Armgash came to America on the ship Speedwell and everyone says that is our Michael. Is it? There seems to be no further record of a Michael Arbogast until 1758 in Frederick Co. Va. Anyone know where he was before that? And what is the proof that the man on the Speedwell is the same man as the one that shows up in Frederick Co. Va.? In 1766 Michael had a survey done on Crabapple Waters. In 1770 Michael was naturalized in Augusta Co. Va. So he was born in a non English area, but that is all I have proven. Any help on this first generation would be appreciated. Jean
