I recently brought up the fact that the 1779 muster list of Capt. Peter Hull's company of Augusta County militia, Second Battalion, listed some individuals who, in their pension declarations, never mentioned serving under Peter Hull. Below is a list of some individuals from that muster list who applied for pensions. (A couple of the names I give may not be the correct individuals.) I have already looked at at the pension declarations for Adam Arbogast and Jacob Hoover (of Pendleton Co.) and the online transcription of Henry Whiteman's. Holly Cochran cited some details from John Hogg's pension. Does anyone have access to the pension declarations for these other individuals? If so, do they mention the name Peter Hull? Another important thing to discover would be the date that Jacob Hoover was promoted to Ensign. I couldn't find it in Chalkley. The muster list is reproduced online at http://www.rootsweb.com/~vahighla/revwar.htm#top PENSIONS: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/va/vapensio.htm ADAM ARBOGHART POCAHONTAS COUNTY PRIVATE VIRGINIA MILITIA $20.00 ANNUAL ALLOWANCE $60.00 AMOUNT RECEIVED MARCH 5, 1833 PENSION STARTED AGE 74 This might be a different William Bennett: WILLIAM BENNETT TYLER COUNTY PRIVATE NEW YORK CONT'L $80.00 ANNUAL ALLOWANCE $240.00 AMOUNT RECEIVED MAY 8, 1833 PENSION STARTED AGE 88 ABRAHAM BURNER RANDOLPH COUNTY PRIVATE VIRGINIA LINE $96.00 ANNUAL ALLOWANCE $34.83 AMOUNT RECEIVED NOVEMBER 27, 1819 PENSION STARTED SUSPENDED MAY 1, 1820 ABRAHAM DUFFIELD NICHOLAS COUNTY PRIVATE VIRGINIA MILITIA $20.00 ANNUAL ALLOWANCE $60.00 AMOUNT RECEIVED DECEMBER 30, 1833 PENSION STARTED AGE 71 PALSER HAMMER PENDLETON COUNTY PRIVATE PENNSYLVANIA MILITIA $30.00 ANNUAL ALLOWANCE $90.00 AMOUNT RECEIVED FEBRUARY 27, 1833 PENSION STARTED AGE 79 JACOB HOOVER PENDLETON COUNTY PRIVATE VIRGINIA MILITIA $20.00 ANNUAL ALLOWANCE $60.00 AMOUNT RECEIVED JANUARY 10, 1834 PENSION STARTED AGE 83 Here is another Jacob Hoover: JACOB HOOVER BATH COUNTY PRIVATE PENNSYLVANIA LINE $96.00 ANNUAL ALLOWANCE $1,051.00 AMOUNT RECEIVED FEBRUARY 4, 1819 PENSION STARTED AGE 83 SUSPENDED MAY 1, 1820 RESTORED JANUARY 17, 1825 JOHN SIMMONS PENDLETON COUNTY PRIVATE VIRGINIA MILITIA $21.66 ANNUAL ALLOWANCE $54.15 AMOUNT RECEIVED FEBRUARY 27, 1833 PENSION STARTED AGE 80 MARK SMITH LEWIS COUNTY INDIAN SPY VIRGINIA MILITIA $80.00 ANNUAL ALLOWANCE $240.00 AMOUNT RECEIVED OCTOBER 12, 1833 PENSION STARTED AGE 76 JAMES WAMSLEY LEWIS COUNTY INDIAN SPY VIRGINIA MILITIA $80.00 ANNUAL ALLOWANCE $240.00 AMOUNT RECEIVED JULY 19, 1833 PENSION STARTED AGE 69 WILLIAM WAMSLEY HARRISON COUNTY PRIVATE VIRGINIA STATE TROOPS $80.00 ANNUAL ALLOWANCE $240.00 AMOUNT RECEIVED JUNE 7, 1833 PENSION STARTED AGE 74 HENRY WHITEMAN RANDOLPH COUNTY PRIVATE PENNSYLVANIA MILITIA $50.00 ANNUAL ALLOWANCE $150.00 AMOUNT RECEIVED MARCH 5, 1833 PENSION STARTED AGE 75
When looking through pensions of those from the area, please keep an eye out for any mention of Hinkle Fort. The only Revolutionary activity that we have found there was John McGlaughlin who was there ca. 1781-1782 which was after John Justus Hinkle, the father, died. Thus, until we can find some Revolutionary contribution by him during his lifetime, he is no longer accepted as a DAR patriot.
