    1. [WVPENDLE] Marriage volume notations

    3. I was asked to explain the marriage volume notations. The usual format for such a notation is volume number, colon, and page number. The more recent editions of Chicago Manual of Style do not require the word "page" be used unless the meaning would otherwise be confusing. The earliest Pendleton County volume of marriages is entitled on the spine of the book "Record of Marriages 1800-1852" since these are the years which are covered in this book. There was a record of earlier marrages, ca. 1787 to 1800 but this has not been found for many decades. Sometimes this first volume is shorted to just Register of Marriages 1800 with the colon and page added, thus Pend Co. Reg of Mrg 1800:35 would be an abbreviated notation for a marriage recorded on page 35 of the Pendleton County Register of Marriages 1800-1852. The spine of the next volume is "Register of Marriages 1853" but the title page used on the LDS microfilm is Register of Marriages 1. Thus, you could see either one in a reference which refers to the same book. Mary Harter's transcribed version of the Pendleton County Marrage Records has the dates 1788-1853 because she used additional sources for her marriages. Hope this makes things clearer. Be sure to ask if you have questions.
