This acreage is on Mill Run in modern day Pendleton County between the South Branch and Greenawalt Gap. Like most streams, the name has changed over the years. It was first called Licking Creek, then Shaver's Run, then Mallow's Run, Mallow's Mill Run, and finally, just Mill Run. It might be helpful - as well as interesting - if others would list what information they have on the history of any of the parcels on the 1789 tax list or give the location, if known, for any parcels. 1. First owner: the original land grant for this 200 acre parcel was issued to PAUL SHAVER [aka Shever]. He also was the one who had previously had the plot surveyed. *"Shever, Paul. Publication 26 July 1765. Other Format Available on microfilm. Virginia State Land Office. Patents 1-42, reels 1-41. Note Location: Augusta County. Description: 200 acres on Licking Creek a branch of the south branch of Potomack on the east side of Sheltons land. " [LVA land grants on-line] 2. Second owners: After Paul Shaver's death, the property passed to his eldest son, GEORGE SHAVER, who sold it to Michael Mallow. The widow, ELIZABETH SHAVER, had dower rights under Virginia law and she conveyed those at the same to Michael Mallow. "Page 398.--18th August, 1772. George ( ) Shaver, eldest son and heir apparent of Paul Shaver, deceased, and Elizabeth ( ) Shevar, widow of Paul, to Michael Mallow, 200 acres lately the property of Paul on Licking Creek, a branch of South Branch of Potowmac, opposite Shelton's land." ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/va/augusta/court/3court52.txt [Chalkley's Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish on-line] 3. Third owner - MICHAEL MALLOW. Upon his death, which was soon after the purchase in the fall of 1772, the property passed to his eldest son, Adam Mallow who was barely 21 yrs old at the time. 4. Fourth owners - ADAM and SARAH MALLOW - who sold a portion of 15 acres to Henry Mallow in 1792. Adam then made an inclusive survey of the 200 acres plus 58 new acres [why the 15 acres wasn't deducted is unexplained]. Adam then sold the 258 acre inclusive grant to Jacob Hull Sr. By Virginia Law, Adam's wife, Sarah aka Sally, was vested in the original property at the time of her marriage to Adam as well as the additional property taken at the time of the inclusive grant so her signature was required on the subsequent conveyances. 5 Nov 1792 Adam and Sarah Mallow sell 2 tracts of land to Henry Mallow for 20 pounds - 15 acres of a 200 acre tract patented to Paul Shaver 26 Jul 1765 and 114 acres patented to Michael Mallow 27 Aug (no year indicated) located on Mallows Run. Pendleton County Deed Book 1:231-232 [Also see entry Rick Toothman's Pendleton County (West) Virginia Deedbook Records, pg 20.] *Mallow, Adam. Publication 14 January 1799. Location: Pendleton County. Description: 258 acres on Mallo's Run between Millers, and Henry Mallows land. [LVA land grants on-line] *5 Sep 1815 Adam and Sally Mallow , residents of Ross Co, OH sell to Jacob Hull Sr 258 acres less 10 to Henry Mallow previously for 1200 pounds. Adam is in the county for the closing and has Sally's POA from Ohio. Pendleton County Deedbook 6:196-198 5. Fifth owners - HENRY MALLOW either 10 or 15 acres of the original 200 acres and JACOB HULL SR either 185 or 190 acres of the original 200 acres plus another 58 acres added to it by inclusive survey.
