He indicates in 1773 that Adam Lough had a survey for 33 acres above Switzer's Gap (p. 381). (The survey was actually for 53 acres and it was never granted but incorporated in Lough's 138 acre parcel although Morton does not so indicate). Morton did indicate the 138 acres was patented in 1787 (p. 386) and on the head of Deer Run. Adam Lough had first purchased Jacob Seybert's 88 acre grant from Nicholas Seybert which Morton indicates was near Dean's Gap (p. 376). In the 'points' of the grant for the 138 acres, it's mentioned that a line was shared with Lough's former property (and the 88 acres is the only property he formerly owned in then Augusta County). So, it's unclear from the beginning whether the land was above Switzer's Gap, at the head of Deer Run, or near Dean's Gap. To make matters worse, Jacob Seybert's 88 acre grant shared some lines with Michael Mallow's 470 acre grant that Morton indicated was at Kline (pg. 376). Kline, Deer Run, and Dean's Gap are all still found in modern Pendleton County and several miles apart. The locations did not actually exist at the time the grants were given but were based on the locations at the time Morton wrote the book (ca 1910). In an article which is on-line at http://www.swcp.com/~dhickman/journals/V5I3/lough.html , Warren Skidmore placed Adam Lough's 138 acres on Shaver's Run which is modern day Mill Run in Pendleton County. Since the 88 acres purchased from Nicholas Seybert shared a line with 138 acres, it's unclear from his wording whether Skidmore also believed that parcel was on Shaver's Run which he may have believed was previously called Switzer's Run: "The search for the family of Adam and George Lough starts on Switzers Gap Run in Pendleton County where Adam, a native of Germany, had settled by 1769. Some 17 years later Adam had an additional 138 acres surveyed there, and his younger brother George acquired his first tract of 68 acres at the same time. Both surveys were done on 16 February 1786. Elsewhere we learn that these tracts were on Shavers Run which heads up in Hardy County, runs in a southerly direction through Mill Creek District of Pendleton County, and drains into the South Branch of the Potomac." From Warren Skidmore's article. Skidmore indicates later in his article that Adam Lough died at Kline - which is, indeed, on modern day Mill Run (formerly Shaver's Run) - and that he is likely buried there. It is unknown whether Skidmore based the location of the 138 acres on misinformation from Morton regarding Michael Mallow's land or another source. The 138 acres is actually at the head of Deer Run. It adjoins pioneers Ulrich Conrad's 240 acre survey and Michael Mallow's 470 acre survey as well as Jacob Seybert's 88 acres. By the time Adam Lough received the grant, Ulrich Conrad had sold his land to Samuel Morral and Michael Mallow had sold his to James Mountgomery who, in turn, had sold it to Adam Harpole so the grant describes the parcel as adjoining Morrel and Harpole as well as Lough's former land which was Seybert's 88 acres. Although we have to give Morton credit for placing the 138 acres on the head of Deer Run, the location of this plot is key to proving that Morton was in error regarding Jacob Seybert's 88 acres near Dean's Gap and Michael Mallow's 470 acres at Kline. All three are proven to have been adjoining. The 'head of Deer Run" is where the stream rises and is just east of the community of Deer Run on a modern map (what Morton often refers to as Deer Run P.O.) Lough's southeast corner is crossed by the stream. Skidmore's conclusion that Adam Lough died at Kline and was likely buried there probably needs reconsideration from his readers. Lough's third parcel for 80 acres which is mentioned in the article as "on Shaver's Run" was granted to George Miller and the description actually reads "on some branches of Shaver's Run". The parcel is just west of Johnson's Run (formerly Harpole Run) which empties into Mill Run (formerly Shaver's Run) from the south and is not quite halfway between Lough's two parcels on the head of Deer Run and the location of Kline. If Adam Lough died at or near Kline, it was not on his own property. The location of Switzer's Gap Run mentioned in the Lough grant and the likely reason it was so named will follow in a post regarding Samuel Morral's 290 acres. [Placing these properties correctly on the map was due to expert guidance from Steven Zuraff and he has my sincerest gratitude. I was not researching Adam Lough at the time but, an ancestor, Michael Mallow. Sandra Keltner] Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
