    3. Sandra, I believe the "run together" was caused by Opera (a browser I was trying out) because all of the line breaks were gone.  Since I had only hit the "Enter" key between the word "test" and the URL, they ran together. There are several variables involved in how a list email is displayed: the sender's email program/provider (in your case MSN, in mine, Yahoo) the recipient's email program/provider the list server Some email programs/providers automatically convert anything beginning with "http://" or "www" into a hyperlink in either outgoing or incoming mail unless the user changes the default settings.  Others don't.  Each one has their own idiosyncrasies.  For example, in the email program (on our computer, not a free email provider like Yahoo) my husband uses for his business, if he wants a URL to appear as a clickable hyperlink in a message received by any AOL address, he has to enclose the URL in angle brackets like these reversed > <.  But he doesn't have to do that if he sends the same message to my Yahoo address.  A clickable hyperlink is actually 2 pieces of information:  the"link name" which is the text that is clickable and the HTML tag which includes the URL the link will take you to.  These do not have to be the same (such as the links in a phishing message that looks like it will take you to the legitimate company site but actually takes you to the bogus site). What we saw previously is simply the 2 different pieces of information being displayed; in this case, they were the same.  The links in a phishing message would display as 2 different URL's.  Since you said you did NOT type that message in plain text, the RootsWeb list server probably did convert it to show both the link name and the URL because RW mailing lists *require* plain text.  Since the URL in my message was plain text, it was not duplicated.  I'll do an example by making the URL clickable in my outgoing Yahoo message: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.westvirginia.counties.pendleton/1775/mb.ashx You should see 2 different but very similar URL's in the message that comes through the list.  Only the message numbers are different (1775 and 1778). The other person received the email with a clickable non-duplicated URL because the email program/provider that received it did not convert it to plain text. (Alternately, rootsweb did, in fact, make the duplication on the posting because I didn't write in, uh, plain text).    (Whoever uses the link language that was posted in your email to the list will also have to look at it carefully and remove "test" at the beginning or it won't work either when they copy and paste it).   Regarding the original email which indicated that the questioner had accessed the Maps posting via ancestry with an  attachment link that directed her to a dysfunctional page - I NEVER made that posting to ancestry.  If it's ancestry's policy to pick up rootsweb postings but redirect attachment links to a non-working page, it's more than unfortunate.   I hope my text comes through plain enough this time . . . I made the postings thinking that they would help, I attached the maps for the same reasons but I don't have the time (nor the patience, obviously) to redirect everyone who accesses the postings through ancestry, so I ask that all the Maps postings I made be deleted because this will be a never-ending problem which will only make me crankier each time.   Thanks for the enlightenment and for removing the Maps postings. ----- Original Message ----- From: Willow Nelson To: wvpendle@rootsweb.com Sent: Friday, February 27, 2009 7:46 PM Subject: Re: [WVPENDLE] Maps are attachments at Pendleton County rootsweb I don't believe it is the RootsWeb system, so am sending this as a testhttp://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.westvirginia.counties.pendleton/1778/mb.ashx I have sent this in "plain text" (as all messages to RootsWeb mailing lists should be) and the URL does not appear as a clickable link while I'm composing it in Yahoo. If this comes through to the list accurately, it is probably formatting from the email client sending the message...Willow --- On Thu, 2/26/09, wvpendle-request@rootsweb.com <wvpendle-request@rootsweb.com> wrote: For some reason the rootsweb posting system doubles the URL on a response.  It isn't a bad link and the previous requester was able to access the maps.  Look at the address - copy it through the first ashx only,.  If that doesn't work, go to www.rootsweb.com<http://www.rootsweb.com/> and follow the links to locate the Pendleton County, WV message board.  I do not have the map scans on my computer to send but they are still available as attachments to some of the messages under the posting Maps of Pendleton County.           ------------------------------- To unsubscribe from the list, please send an email to WVPENDLE-request@rootsweb.com with the word 'unsubscribe' without the quotes in the subject and the body of the message
