Johann I and his predecessors were born into slavery and were serfs until he was released and set free in 906 AD by King Ludwig III of Burgandy, at the request of Count Purchartus at Rottorlo. After becoming a freeman he enjoyed the patronage of the Bavarian royalty and was ennobled/knighted and allowed to us the "Von" in his name as a sign of this.
