This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: slkmallow Surnames: Shelton, Dyer, Seybert, Conrad, Mallow, Lough, Kile, Hollingsworth Classification: deed Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.westvirginia.counties.pendleton/1778/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I received a request for information about maps with land plots from the WVPendleton-request list but the information would be helpful to others with interest in Pendleton County so I'm posting the response here. There are several maps available from the Pendleton County Surveyor (for an average price of $25. each plus postage). Most of the maps do not have comprehensive plotting except for the Maxwell Survey Map (a replat of one of the Levi Hollingsworth tracts) made in 1898 by I. T. Kile which covers over 14,000 acres west from the South Fork to a series of tracts more or less in line with Greenawalt Gap and with a north boundary of the Hardy County line to a southern boundary roughly along the road from Fort Seybert to Kline's cross roads. Many of the original land grants within that area are plotted and some were updated with names of the 1898 owners. Steve Zuraff has added significantly to that map with parcels south of there all the way past Fort Seybert and a significant portion of the plots west of the map to and just across the South Branch. The area between the South Branch and North Fork which lies north of Franklin has been roughly filled in. I've helped with gathering the research - land conveyances, surveys, probate, land tax records, etc.- and with assembling the plots. It has taken hundreds of hours of research and has not been inexpensive. Much of the reconstruction was difficult due to surveying and recording errors, particularly in the earliest grants, and it was necessary, sometimes, to follow the conveyance of certain parcels out through several owners over many decades to resolve discrepancies. We suspended activity on the project to allow time for other research. However, many important discoveries were made during the work. Steve was able to reconstruct a complete history and boundaries of the "Shelton's" Upper Tract grant, an early, large tract on the South Branch, as well as the conveyances out of the grant to various original settlers and some of the re-conveyances from those pioneers to others. A reconstruction of the first and second round of conveyances out of the South Fork grant that became the Dyer Settlement, which includes the land on which Fort Seybert stood, has also been made and refutes some commonly held misconceptions about the relative locations of certain owners. Many of the other completed plot configurations have genealogical significance. I previously posted data regarding the original grants to Ulrich Conrad, Jacob Seybert, and Michael Mallow and subsequent owners including Adam Lough that came out of the research under replies to 1789 Names and acreage from land tax list Pendleton County Lower District. Thanks for your post. Has the progress of Shelton's Upper Tract been made public anywhere? Also, in particular I believe it is a scan of Isaac Kile's survey (Hollingsworth tracts) that I am looking for. I had this on an email scan a while back. I can not recover it because my old computer "bit the dust." Another area of interest is the portion of Pendleton (along 220) south of Franklin in the Ft. Trout Rock area (near the caves). Is there any map in existence that shows the surveys of those lands? (current or past) Thank you for your assistance. Pam
Pam, Those are reductions of several maps - not parts of maps - if I remember correctly. I'd previously had all the maps reduced but after plotting everything into the deed mapper program, I eventually even mailed my resized copies to others and just saved the "originals". I've had quite a few requests for the map scans but, from the questions asked, I'm not sure that folks understand what they include. Also, be advised that the original copies of the maps are quite large - usually over 2' x 3' and they were resized to legal and then scanned and, in some cases, the edges were cropped off during the process. They will probably not be helpful to most unless you already have good basic map reading skills and a pretty good idea of the area covered - particularly the numbered North Fork maps which are pretty much devoid of identifying landmarks. With the exception of the replat of the one Hollingsworth tract by Kile, the maps are incomplete and only show a few plots or a few places of residence. A description of what's contained on each map is on this thread: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.westvirginia.counties.pendleton/1778/mb.ashx<http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.westvirginia.counties.pendleton/1778/mb.ashx> Steve and I used the various maps - with varying degrees of success - to help pinpoint several thousand acres of grants - in several different areas - that were not on the maps but we were working with a deed mapping program, copies of hundreds of grant recordings, succeeding conveyances from those grants out over several owners and many decades in some cases, probate records, tax records, historical sources, and current maps to help us. I have no objection sending the resized scans (that Pam was kind enough to send back to me) to anyone but I don't want anyone to be disappointed. They are not complete representations of any area - except the Hollingsworth tract by Kile which has errors as well as omissions. On the other maps, unless your ancestor was one of the random few whose plot was drawn in, you probably won't find much in the way of help for your research. So, I'll ask that you read the descriptions on the thread above and resend your requests for the maps - by title given in the posting - in which you have interest. I'll email in batches. For some reason the rootsweb posting system doubles the URL on a response. It isn't a bad link and the previous requester was able to access the maps. Look at the address - copy it through the first ashx only,. If that doesn't work, go to www.rootsweb.com<http://www.rootsweb.com/> and follow the links to locate the Pendleton County, WV message board. I do not have the map scans on my computer to send but they are still available as attachments to some of the messages under the posting Maps of Pendleton County. ----- Original Message ----- From: Peggy Wilson<mailto:jwilson7@twcny.rr.com> To: wvpendle@rootsweb.com<mailto:wvpendle@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, February 24, 2009 9:29 PM Subject: Re: [WVPENDLE] Maps are attachments at Pendleton County rootsweb Bad link I can't get in either.
