I too am a RootsWeb list admin - of over 2 dozen lists. The messages caught in the spam filter are identified on the admin tools page (where Bonnie describes 'checking some boxes') as "Post sent by a non-member to a members-only list." Nedra explained earlier, the email address of a list subscriber was faked. Therefore, RootsWeb's filters would NOT identify the message as being from a 'non-member'. The only method to stop 'spoofed' emails is to moderate the list. Every message would have to be approved by the list admin before it was distributed to the subscribers. Moderating an 'open list' in which all subscribers are free to post is no small thing. It's normally used as a means to shut down flame wars and is not intended to be used to control the occasional spam. Honestly, how many spams has this list received? I've been a member for at least 5 years and don't remember any others...unless it was truly horrible, there is no reason for me to remember such an inconsequential item.
