    1. Re: [WVPENDLE] When & where did Lewis Bush die - records inconsistency

I have not worked the Bush family in some time and never in the depth that I'd worked the Mallows. In 1782 and 1783 when the southern 2/3 or so of Pendleton Co was under Rockingham's jurisdiction, Lewis Bush is listed on the PP tax records along with Michael and Leonard in Robert Davis' district. (Another group of Bushes - George, John, Jacob and Adam are also listed but likely located in a different section of Davis' district). In 1789, Lewis Bush is not listed on PP Tax list in the lower district of the newly formed Pendleton Co nor is there another adult male in the households of either Michael or Leonard. It's possible Lewis was residing in a SIL's household but that needs more work or, less likely but possible, that Lewis was exempted from PP taxes due to severe physical disablility. But, there is also an inconsistency on the land tax records - Lewis is listed in 1787 (Rockingham) with 90a but Leonard is listed in 1789 with what appears to be the same 90a. These parcels seem to have been part of an old Moser grant of 190a which were actually later recorded (1793) as sold to Michael Bush as 75a and Leonard (not Lewis) as 115a. It's possible that the recording of Lewis' name is an error when Leonard was meant but, in light of Lewis not being on the PP tax list in 1789, it would normally be an alert to look for the death of Lewis between ca 1788 while that portion of Pendleton was under Rockingham Co. Lewis' 23a parcel near Reed's Creek, granted in 1791, was warranted 27 Nov 1781 and surveyed 15 Jun 1790 but that alone does not mean he was alive after he applied for the warrant - once the process was started in a given name, it continued in that name unless there was sale before the issuance of the grant. There are several examples of posthumous grants in the Pendleton Co. area (including the 190a sold to Bush brothers by Adam Moser). These are inconsistencies from a period of change of counties which may be the explanation but it's probably worth considering that Lewis may have died much earlier than is commonly accepted. I'll try to do further research in the PP tax lists for Pendleton Co to confirm whether Lewis or Eva, as widow, appear between 1790 and 1802 when they purportedly left for Ohio. There may also be something in the few Rockingham Co. records that still exist but I don't have immediate access to those films which are primarily unindexed court notes and very tedious reading. I don't know what evidence other researchers used to place Lewis in Ohio so, if anyone knows, or you come across that evidence, please let me know. If anyone else has worked on this, please let us know. All in all, it's quite interesting. - Sandra Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list.
