To all who are interested, the Treasure Mountain Festival is held here in Pendleton County, primarily in Franklin, on the third weekend of September each year. This year it will be Sept 17, 18, and 19. The festival is a celebration of our heritage. It began in recognition of the Indian massacre at Fort Seybert, and the supposed iron kettle of "treasures" that the Indians took away from the fort, along with their hostages. The story goes that the Indians carrying the kettle fell behind the rest of the war party and their captives, and when they caught up with them, they no longer had the kettle in their possession. Many people have hunted for the iron kettle over the years, but it has never been found (thus the "Treasure Mountain"). Each year, a re-inactment of the massacre and fort burning is held on Saturday evening around 6 or 7 PM near the original site of the fort in Fort Seybert. I've been there a couple of times. It's pretty impressive if you haven't seen it before. A word of caution, though......park somewhere on 33 East heading out of Franklin toward Fort Seybert if you want to get there before it starts....the annual parade is at 4 PM, and traffic is so bad afterward that you can't get through to get there in time. The trip from Franklin normally takes 15-20 minutes. Kim Kline kskepi1@access.mountain.net m Kline kskepi1@access.mountain.net
