If so then his children were Leonard, Henry, William, George and Elizabeth. Yes, Leonard Simmons Sr. is the man who married Anna Maria ---- as his second wife (by whom he had no known children). His first wife was named Catherine Elizabeth, as evidenced by an obscure church record, and when they gave their consent in Augusta County for dau. Sarah to m. Philip Wimer. The children "Leonard, Henry, William, George, and Elizabeth" are from Oren Morton's "HPC" and are misleading; Leonard, William, and George are incorrect, and there were several other children not identified there. While not impossible, I just haven't seen any evidence to support it. The article in the ARA journal, Vol. 4, #3 is actually the retraction to the original "Simmons Quagmire" article I wrote for the ARA journal, Vol. 3, #2, p.35. There have been quite a few additions and corrections in the five years since that first article was published (I didn't think it would be this long before I finished!). If these questions could be answered, and if they are correct >this would prove that our Simmons line came from Germany. Yes, Leonard Sr. and Nicholas Simmons were first mentioned in the same record, when they entered land in Pendleton (then Augusta) in 1753. This record was "lined through," suggesting that it was invalidated; however, it does prove that they were there that early. Contrary to what I wrote in the ARA journal, there is now not any evidence available to clarify what relationship Leonard Sr. and Nicholas had; however, I have NO doubt that they were closely related. And yes, it now seems clear that Nicholas Simmons' wife was ANNA Margaret, NOT MARIA Margaret. I also have no doubt that the Pendleton Simmons' were of Germanic heritage (based on their Germanic naming patterns, and participation in Germanic churches); there just isn't clear evidence as to where, when, and what German town they came from. While the first Simmons article in the ARA journal claimed that they came from Pfeffelbach, Germany, the subsequent retraction (Vol. 4, #3) (due to newly found evidence) clarified that Pfeffelbach Nicholas Simmons had remained in PA.
