Carolyn, I enjoyed your note about Pendleton. I think we native West Virginians are especially blessed to have a place to go back home. My mother's paternal grandfather was born in Pendleton, but left there as a young man. After the Civil War, he was in Gilmer Co., and I was born in Calhoun Co. I came to Charleston when I graduated high school and I'm still here. I didn't even know about the Pendleton Co. connection until I started my research; my mother always said the family came from Augusta Co., VA. I've only been to Pendleton a few times and to Highland Co. once but it is beautiful country and the people I met were very friendly.
