Happy Thanksgiving to all! Sigh. . . What a tangled web we weave! Even the Hinkle Family records cannot offer one single item of *proof* for this placement, which shows that one must look at EVERY available record. I will also admit that no one has taken the time to thoroughly research this family. The info below tells us much about this family but still offers no proven identification for Christena. The Christena below died in 1912 and her death record might offer the answer. The Henckel Genealogy (1964), page 367, shows that the wife of this Martin Judy was Christena Harper, daughter of Joshua, but I certainly would not use this as a definitive source without further research. I do not have a list of the children of Joshua to see if the Eli Harper who served as her bondsman might have been a brother. This would afford another clue. NOTE: we have Harpers shown in each generations but there is nothing below that connects them. As a side editorial note: this problem offers an excellent example of the limitations of many genealogical databases. Pendleton County families are so confusing compounded by published errors. Sources MUST be cited and discussed in order to assess the possible validity of the information. Children of Col. Jesse Hinkle and Catharine Harper--we have discussed this couple at length before. They never married. Their many children used both Hinkle and Harper as last names, as do the Hinkle files which were researched at various times by many historians. Mary Harper/Hinkle, born ca. 1808, died after 1870 census, married 16 March 1829 [family records, not recorded in Pendleton County] [Henckel Gen. #5-12-51] Adam Judy, 1805-1871. [Morton p. 237, under Judy, Line of Martin, Adam Judy born 12 November 1805, died 27 February 1871, married Mary Hinkle.] The will of this Adam Judy, dated 1871, lists heirs: Martin, Elizabeth, Jane, Catharine, Ellen and Mary daughter of Jane. Since Jane of the will was called Phoebe Jane in 1850 and 1860 census schedules, and Ellen of the will was called Sidney E. in 1850 and 1860 schedules, and the child of Phoebe Jane was called Eliz. J. in 1860 and Mary E. in 1870, things are confused. [This will is recorded in Pend. Co., but the previous historian failed to include the complete citation!] Their son [although I admit I have NOTHING that proves this is the correct Martin!] Martin Judy married Christena Harper 28 September 1852. [Pendleton Co. Marriages 1800, p. 1a. Marriage bond dated 5 August 1852, bondsmen Martin Judy and Eli Harper. [Harter, Bonds, p. 17.] Note: nothing here identifies her parents!!! Martin Judy died 8 January 1885, age 54, wife Christena. [Pend. Co. Death Register, abstracted in Grave Register II, Pendleton Co., WV, 1980, p. 61] His parents are not shown on his death record. Marrin [sic] Judy born 1831, died 1885. Christena Judy born 1831, died 1912. Both are buried in Martin Judy Cemetery, near Circleville, Pendleton Co., WV.
