    3. Regarding the Grave Registry Errors: First, consider the source for volume one. Although they meant well, the data collected from the grave registry vol 1was complied by local people walking around a cemetery copying information directly off of tombstones. Most of these people were not serious genealogists and in most cases was not verified by any other reliable source. In some cases, people were added to the list solely on the basis that they were told by someone else that they were buried in that cemetery. Several people are buried in more than one cemetery. The most common error I have found is mis-transferred dates. I can't recall any in particular, but I know I've found over 50 errors in my research. In several cases I've went to the cemetery and found 8's confused with 3's, dates off by 20 years, etc. They were simply miscopied. The older tombstones are often extremely difficult to read and it's easy to "guess" at the right date. Add this to the fact that in some cases, the tombstones was not erected until much later than the person died leaving a margin of error for the engraver. The second type of dangerous error regards the notes at the far right of the person. For example, in the North Fork Cemetery, it lists my uncle John G. Raines with the correct dates but lists him in the notes section as the son of Miles Raines. Nowhere on the tombstone does it list John G. was the son of Miles Raines. In fact, John G. was the son of Joseph F. Raines and nephew of Miles Raines. This implies that there was a lot of editorial additions not factually supported by the tombstones. All I am implying is to use other documents to support what you find and don't rely solely on the registry. Gene Phares gphares@nilfisk-advance.com What kind of "known" errors? I hadn't heard this. Thanks. --shaunta Gene Phares wrote: > [snip] Volume 1 has many known errors that were still not corrected in volume 2 so be careful with what you find. > > Gene Phares > gphares@nilfisk-advance.com >
