What books beside Morton's have others found as helpful resources? Are there others that are more recent especially those with information that can be documented? What other sources have researchers found helpful? In addition to Morton's, we have Pendleton Co. West Virginia Past and Present (c) 1991 LC#91-65852, Don Mills, Inc. There is a phone number of 704 452-7600. Sandra
Hi Sandra, Actually there are three Morton books, though I can't remember much about them. The one everybody cites is his original book on Pendleton County. There is a sequel in which he does corrections and adds from additional records, and there is a third book on an adjoining county (don't ask me which one, I don't recall) where there is a lot of overlap with Pendleton County. There is a gal named Harter who wrote a book on Morton, in which she went through all the county records, loose papers, and so forth, as well as marriage bonds and Morton's books, and published the sum total. Bottom line was she didn't find all that many errors in Morton. And there were things in Morton that she couldn't find in county records, but very little in county records he hadn't picked up. Her conclusion, as best I can remember, was that he had gone through a lot of local private records, Bibles and so forth in addition to county records. I can't recall the name of that book. The other main reference, probably pretty accurate, is Toothman's book on probate and land title records. The Past and Present book is cited some, too, but it's more historical, it's my impression; I've never seen it, but it is rarely cited for births, deaths or marriages. I get the impression that is not the author's primary direction. But this is all from old memory; I'd really be interested if anybody knows any better sources.
