Karen - I have posted this both to the West Virginia page and the Puffenbarger page with no results. My husband's great grandmother was Jennie Oats born March 1875 in Lewis Co., West Virginia. She died in Hall Co., Nebraska in 1931. The dilemma is that in 1880 she is listed as adopted with Samuel and Mary Ann McCluster family in Lewis Co., W. Virginia under the name of S. E. Puffenbarger, age 6. She and her parents all being born in West Virginia. They are living in the Freeman's Creek area. When she got married she listed her name as Jennie Oats and her parents were Benjamin Oates and Elizabeth M. Puffenbarger. She came to Kansas with the McCluster family. They had a Rhimer boy adopted in 1880 and in 1900 they had a new adopted boy by the name of Guy Moffet. My husband's grandmother knew nothing of her mother's background other than who raised her and her being adopted. I have tried Puffenbarger and Oates to try and find a marriage, but getting absolutely no where. It makes me wonder if she was illegitimate as went by two different last names. Any help would be appreciated. Jerilyn
