Hello list, I'm the volunteer admin for the Pendleton Co., WV *message board*. Nedra explained the relationship between the mailing list and the message board very well, but I'd like to add one thing: When a post is made on the board, the author has the option of checking a box to receive an email alert when someone replies. I believe the "reply made" messages are intended to activate that alert, for the benefit of both the board user and the person who replied on the list. Like Nedra, I have no control over what someone posts on the board. Post can only be deleted if they violate RootsWeb's Community Guidelines by being advertising, pornography, spam, etc. While the wording of the last paragraph of the recent "reply made" post irritated me beyond belief, that in itself is not cause for deletion. It's not even possible to contact that person and politely ask him/her to rephrase the information. Willow --- Nedra wrote: Secondly, there is also a Pendleton County message board at rootsweb which is public and requires no subscription. As a courtesy, any message posted on that board is forwarded to this list, but the reverse does NOT occur--our messages are private to only subscribers and are not posted to the Pendleton County message board. The message here which appears to cause recent comments was a reminder that not everyone (probably very few) who post to the message board subscribe to this list. Thus, a response here to a message board inquiry cannot be read by the original inquirer. Remember, that these message board posting are forwarded as they are written, including any replies also posted at the message board. As administrator of this list (but not of the message board) I have absolutely no control over their content nor the person making the inquiry. Often these are newbies so we do need some understanding.

Hi, Thank you all for your support through the years, and I agree that we have a great mailing list and the most active for the area. I am the admin of this group and would certainly like to correct any perceived problems. First, would someone who is experiencing "gibberish" please forward it to me privately. I personally have not seen any so I am not sure of its cause. Occasionally I receive messages from people using Macs with odd characters, but have not seen that on this list. And, the advice to be sure your emails go out in "plain text" format is excellent. Regardless of how you have them set, to save space Rootsweb converts all messages to plain text, and this "translation" may be what some of you are seeing? Secondly, there is also a Pendleton County message board at rootsweb which is public and requires no subscription. As administrator of this list (but not of the message board) I have absolutely no control over their content nor the person making the inquiry. Often these are newbies so we do need some understanding. Regarding whether or not to include the original message when responding, one cannot really make a blanket yes/no. Obviously, there is no need to repeat all forwarded headings, the previous 5 replies, and the "Me toos" which I suspect was Pam's intent. Personally, I appreciate when the original message is included--I am totally lost on an exchange that goes: Message: Does anyone know where Susie Smith, born 1860, died 1880, lived in Riverton area, might be buried? Reply (and only info given in the entire message): She is in Smith Cemetery. My first thought is WHO is in Smith Cemetery? Again, thank you all for your support and I appreciate your comments and concerns. Just let me know, and please do send me, privately, the gibberish when you receive it in a message. There are a few things the members of this group can do to help make their messages more effective. 1. DO NOT include original post in your reply. 2. Set your email to plain text rather than HTML when replying to a message from this board. 3. Type a message that is descriptive of the lines you are researching. Please use dates, locations and any other information to clearly identify the lines you are working on. "Looking for John Conrad" or "Catherine Miller" is not effective. There are probably multiple John's and Catharine's in this county. Please identify the person the best you can. There are also settings the list administrator can put in place to stop the gibberish. I suggest the administrator take a look at the group settings and make some adjustments. Many my not like these suggestions, but I bet you will find more meaningful responses and understanding of the messages with little adjustments from both the administrator and our members. This used to be a good site where people could exchange information and be helpful to one another. It has become a nightmare of gibberish where messages are obscured by line after line of meaningless text, scoldings about how to reply, etc. The fact that the site is so seldom used anymore ought to raise a big red flag to whoever is running this thing. Why doesn't somebody there wake up and make it right again? Bill Rexroad Hutchinson, Kansas

Since you know that 3-year-old Jasper Westfall was living with Isaac Miller in 1880, that means he was probably bound out to Miller by the Pendleton County Court, most likely on request of the Overseer of the Poor. Get the Pendleton County Court records from that time and you probably will find a record of it. The parents would be named as well as the reason for his being bound out. Microfilm of those court records is available through your local (or nearby) LDS Family History Center. Bill Rexroad Hutchinson, Kansas
In adding to Bill's comments, I found one of my grandfather's who was in a similar situation in the Pendleton County Chancery Court records. Hope this helps, Matthew Bill Rexroad <rexroad3@cox.net> wrote: Since you know that 3-year-old Jasper Westfall was living with Isaac Miller in 1880, that means he was probably bound out to Miller by the Pendleton County Court, most likely on request of the Overseer of the Poor.
