    2. No, Bill was not the only one who got that garbled mess. I just ignored it. I really think it is a computer language problem and I am no computer specialist. Is there anyone on here who understands computer language? I believe this happened because of some particular way it was sent. I have gotten garbage like that on other lists. I never thought it might be someone trying to spam or phish my account. Hum??? **************Gas prices getting you down? Search AOL Autos for fuel-efficient used cars. 3. Nedra, this is becoming more and more puzzling. I deleted that Vol. 3, Issue 40 message , so I am unable to send it to you. Next time I see a similar example I will forward it. But here are a couple of puzzling things: You say Volume 3 should go back ten years or so. This message you sent yesterday (7 July) was contained in Vol. 3, Issue 42. This is right in sequence with the post I complained about a couple of days ago, Vol. 3, Issue 40. I don't keep a log of volume numbers and issue numbers, but surely Rootsweb or somebody does. I prefer the Digest mode instead of the L mode because it saves me time. At least it used to back in the day when there was a lot of traffic here. But another puzzling thing is your comment that a Digest is sent every day. I don't get one every day. Sometimes not every week. It just seems to depend on when people want to send something. And all the superfluous garbage I am seeing appears to be coming from Rootsweb, not from the person sending a message. I'll send you an example later. Bill Rexroad Hutchinson, Kansas

    3. I looked at some of the other archives and discovered the "trash" at the bottom is not related to digest traffic as it was *not* on the digests that only had list traffic.  However, on every list I checked, it was on every message gatewayed from the corresponding board starting on July 3rd.  Quite frankly, I think this was a very bad move by TGN and believe many of the gateways will be closed as a result.  (My  overall opinion of the current direction TGN has taken with the boards and RootsWeb as a whole is pretty low, so this is icing on the cake.)  I will be writing TGN at the address they provided ("You can contact us at: The Generations Network, Inc., 360 West 4800 North, Provo, UT 84604, Attn: Customer Service.") to let them know what I think.  Hope everyone else will too.  Willow

    3. Here is the digest Bill was referencing.  The "Important Note" is the last portion of the gatewayed message.  Everything beyond that is some type of tag-line/footer. Bill, this is the first digest I'd seen that on (but have seen it on the subsequent ones) but there's a possibility I hadn't scrolled to the bottom...  I agree - that is a ridiculous amount of garbage with one short message.  It would not surprise me in the least if TGN has added that to all digests, but Pendleton is the only mailing list I subscribe in digest format.  If that is the case, Nedra cannot do anything about it because list admins can add a header to digests but not a footer. 3. I hate to get involved in these nasty little exchanges, but I might have an explanation.  I don't remember getting any junk mail from this list.  It would seem that Bill is the only one.  A particularly irritating scam run by some spammers is to use an otherwise trusted email as the "from" to hit people.  I have had this happen where they once used mine--for a fellow genealogist who really hated me, but I was in her contacts list.  She got some spam "from" me and used it as an excuse to visciously flame me...all over again.  I knew that was what had happened, but there wasn't any point in explaining it to her.  It has happened to me "from" other people I know as well.  If you know your email program you can make the message "from" anyone. Please send me Vol 3, issue 40 so I can see what you are referencing. I can only check individual messages and have no way of knowing what is in a specific Digest Volume/#. This list had 22 messages in June and 9 so far this month and I found no message in those months from Donald Trumbo. I then did an advanced search (a feature available to all of you) and found NO message in 2008 from anyone named Trumbo or Donald. Our list archives go back to 1995 and the WVPendle-L probably even earlier. Thus it seems that Volume 3 should be at least 10 years ago. I also did a full search of ALL archive messages and found no message was ever sent by "Donald Trumbo." I also checked all of the settings for the Digest mode. The "system" has NO headers or footers unique to Digest mode, so that is not the explanation. Also, the Digest is sent every day or when it reaches 20k in size, whichever is sooner, so no message from the WVPendle-D should be very large. Please do send me this example privately. I am as puzzled as everyone else to figure out what you are seeing. I noted that some senders or their ISPs add footers to their messages, just as Rootsweb does to all our messages. Only the sender or the ISP can control the content of individual messages, including the footers. Rootsweb has no means of stripping footers off individual messages. Since a Digest is sent every day anyway, you might try using the -L list mode rather than Digest for awhile to see if this helps the problem. 3. Bill, stay in here with us. I tried to offer some suggestions before when you brought the issue up the first time. You might want to check two things and it might help. When you set your member preferences for mail delivery from this group you had a choice of MIME or PLAIN Text. Plain digests are sent to users with ALL posts listed in one long email. For most subscribers, MIME digests will appear with all posts as individual attachments. "The default digest delivery is Plain." Hence, you are getting all the posts, replies and responses as one long email. Also, you might want to check some of your email settings for sending and receiving. There may be some adjustments you can make to stop the emails from coming in as HTML. Hang in here Bill. You are a real asset to this list! Also, Nedra---Thank you for volunteering your expertise and most of all--thanks for your time and efforts to keep us going on here.
