Based upon the birth date of Benjamin Pennington in 1884 and Celia Sites's earliest estimated birth date of ca. 1871, it would seem that perhaps Peter Pennington was not his biological father. DNA testing would certainly help clarify this. It is also perhaps meaningful that she was the youngest child of Mary Ann (Harper) Sites and her ONLY child not mentioned in the deeds and guardianship records of her husband's children. [Pendleton County, WV, County Court Record B 1866-1872:147; and "Deed of Sale from Johnson Sites, Guardian, to Joshua Day," 24 November 1874 (recorded 6 April 1876), Pendleton County, WV, Deed Book 21:11-12.] These documents are dated 2 years after the death of Mary Ann so it seems unlikely that Celia was not born yet and thus not included. Definitely, an interesting and challenging family to pursue. Nedra Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Admittedly, I have not looked at this family in several years. Celia Sites, born ca. 1871 and probably prior to 23 April 1872, per her marriage and guardianship record. She has not been located in the 1880 census by any last name. Celia undoubtedly was born after Job Sites' death in 1870, and does not appear in any record as his child. On 1 August 1884 in Pendleton County, James P. Sites was appointed guardian of Celia Sites, aged 12, infant daughter of Mary A. Sites, deceased. [Pendleton County, WV, County Court Record 1881-1886:238. This record would suggest a later birthdate for Celia than that shown in her marriage record. If this date is accurate, her paternity is unknown.] James P. Sites, guardian of Celia Moyers, nee Sites, infant daughter of Polly Ann Sites, deceased, resigned as her guardian on 23 April 1891, and Aaron I. Moyers was appointed, she being 19 years of age. [Pendleton County, WV, County Court Record 1890-1897:20.] Celie Sites, aged 20, married Aaron I. Moyers, aged 22, on 28 October 1890 in Grant County, West Vir! ginia. [Grant County, WV, Register of Marriages 1:40.] On 1 October 1891 Isaac and Celia Moyers of Grant County conveyed to Martin H. Harper their undivided interest in the lands of Jesse W. Harper, deceased. ["Deed of Sale from Isaac and Celia Moyers to Martin H. Harper," 1 October 1891 (recorded 13 April 1892), Pendleton County, WV, Deed Book 31:78-79.] Celia was the granddaughter of Jesse W. Harper of Pendleton County. The surnames field entries on ALL of the new posts in the thread were edited for one of these reasons: a.) the field was left blank when surnames were mentioned in the post; b.) surnames were entered in the field when none were mentioned in the post; or c.) punctuation other than commas was used. The Board FAQ (link located at the bottom of this and every message board page) states: "Once you have typed your message, enter all of the surnames mentioned in your post in the "Surnames" field. Please include **only** surnames that are mentioned in your post- not all surnames you might be researching." I'm sure we all appreciate an index because it makes our research easier. The surnames field entries create a globally searchable surnames index for every message on every board. That means users can search every one of the current 19.95 million messages on RootsWeb/Ancestry for a specific surname via the Advanced Search feature (just think by next week, the count will be over 20 million). A regular search cannot differentiate between the usages of a word: an occupation "Farmer", a location such as "Pendleton", a given name such as "Dolly" or just another word such as "States". Therefore, a regular search for "Dolly" will have posts about "Dolly Madison" and Dolly as a surname. A few minutes ago, the regular search for Dolly yielded over 22,000 entries. An Advanced Search with Dolly in the "Surname field" box (and no other criteria) yielded 190 results. Pretty significant differences, isn't it? Although the FAQ doesn't mention it, using only commas is very important because the search engine recognizes that as the separation between 2 surnames. Is "Van Allen Baker" two surnames or three? The search engine does not recognize "Tingler/Dingler" as being two surnames. It cannot guess your intent if you type "Johns(t)on" in the surnames field. The search engine works best when surnames are entered in the following manner: one, two, three Climbing off my soapbox now, Willow Volunteer Admin Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I am going out on a limb with a theory about Thomas Collett who lived in Pendleton Va. and married Margaret Bartlett, and had sons Thomas and Solomon. So far, other Collett lines have not connected him. He is a mystery. Now for even more mysteries, Thomas was on early census records and land and legal records as Thomas Collick. He was also on a record of being at the Battle of Pt. Pleasant and signed his name as Thomas McCollick. He even has a mountain in Pendleton co. named for him, Colic(k) mountain. Do you think it is possible that he might be related to the McColloch (they sometimes went by M'Colloch) family who originated McColloch's Path? These McCollochs lived for a time in Hardy co. Va., and the name Solomon is common in their family. They were Indian scouts and Indian traders. The Draper Manuscripts say Thomas found his brother George fighting with the Indians at Pt. Pleasant (this George died in the battle). So it could be possible that George was a McColloch belonging to this Indian battling family. We know that Thomas Collett was at the Battle of Pt. Pleasant because of a deposition he made regarding Andrew Skidmore where he states he was there, so he did use the name McCollick. So far I can't find where he fits in with the McColloch family - but they do have Thomas's, Georges, and Solomons in that family. Why they later went by Collett, I don't know. Morton says they were Scotch-Irish which fits with McColloch, Collett is a more English name. This is my pet theory and sure to make a lot of Collett's (including me - my grandmother was a Collett) say no way!! Any comments?? Happy New Year... Becky
